"Dark, sir?"
I knew what this was about. It shouldn't have been a big deal to me, but it was.
"It's time."
I shut my eyes at the words.
"I'll start the search for the next one tomorrow." I nearly spat out the words, looking out the window towards the dimly lit street. It was a cold night, no one in their right minds would be out.
"Are they to be reset or executed?"
My eyes glided towards the anxious boy in the doorway. He was much too young to be in this line of business. But he knew...and I didn't have the will to kill or reset him. I wanted with all my might to leave this all behind, but I knew I couldn't. I knew it would haunt me. I knew the blood would forever remain on my hands. I spoke, voice monotone.
"Execute. We don't need any mistakes."
"Yes sir. Will you be performing it or will The Horoscope be the best option?"
"The Horoscope." I replied.
I could practically feel the poor kid deflate. I was much quicker. Even so, I wouldn't dare step near that door until I had made a new plan. A new candidate was needed. Without any further question, he turned and left.
I looked to the window again, a steady drizzle now settling over the asphalt outside. The dim lights lining the street flickered from time to time, long over-due replacement and maintenance. My fingers drummed over the desk I leaned on, yet my focus remained outside. Who was left? Who was out there that should've been in here all along? What was I missing? It all had to pull together somehow. The map below my hands wrinkled, and I looked down at it. Dots and strings traveled across the page, silently mocking me. It was infuriating, knowing that I was walking along a forgotten path.
A scream cut into my thoughts, but I wasn't surprised. The horrors of which they were seeing was merely a sliver of what my world condemned. I could hear murmurs down the hall, some of them sorrowful, others coated in disdain.
Another scream, accompanied by the reverberating sound of The Shard infecting their mind. Pure terror, unimaginable agony bouncing around in their skull. A smile crept across my face.
The halls soaked in blood. The calls of the truly damned. The cries of a stories end. They just saw it all, and it did nothing but fuel my fire to find a promising candidate. Lightning struck outside, the pull of The Horoscope tempting nature to bend to its superior will.
The last scream cut through the air hauntingly, casting echos around the building. The lights outside all wavered in unison. Then all was silent. My hand glided over the crumpled and abused map below me. The victim's scream reminded me of the other end of town. Reminded me of the streets lined with broken souls.
What a wonderful place to start.
I picked up a pin and stabbed it into the paper; it found itself in the deranged side of town, just as I had hoped.
It was settled then. The next candidate would be troubled.
What a nice challenge.
