Franklin Delano Roosevelt's voice was soothing through the old radio. The girls had never used the radio that was placed in the corner of the kitchen. It seemed wrong that the only time it was ever used was for this matter. The four girls sat around the table quietly. There was an empty chair to the right of June.

Every morning the girls would sit down and eat breakfast and talk about the latest news with the war or boys on the base. Yet, Betty always said something optimistic. No matter how dreary the topic was she always lightened the load. Supposedly, the worst part of her death was that she wasn't here to lighten it.

"Why did it have to be her?" June asked quietly.

Evelyn placed a hand on June's back and rubbed circles.

"War has a way of picking the most beautiful souls."

A soft bugle echoed through the empty hangar. No one spoke a word out of respect. At least one hundred coffins were in this hangar. Each one had a neatly folded American flag placed over it with a small wreath of red flowers. Some had a picture placed next to the wreath and some didn't. All of them had a gold plate with a name engraved on it.

It was strange to see all the men dressed in their uniforms and the women dressed in black. Usually everyone was in colorful dresses and patterned Hawaiia shirts. June brushed her hair to the side as she entered the hangar with the girls. June walked past a man reading from a Bible.

"And where is God in all of this? Our enemies believe that a divine wind protects them, but we see our friends laid out here today."

The four girls continued to walk through the hangar. Evelyn broke off when she saw Rafe and hugged him softly. June moved to Danny when she saw him. He grabbed her hand and placed a kiss on her head.

They continued to walk hand in hand through the rows of coffins. June spotted Red leaning over one. Tears filled June's eyes as she watched him kneel beside the coffin. He slowly let the sadness consume him as he leaned his head against the side of it and let the tears flood his eyes. June placed her hand on his shoulder as everyone gathered around the coffin.

"Thank you for the h-happiest year of my life." He whispered to Betty, low enough that only he heard the words.

June looked down at the picture of Betty. It was the perfect one for her. She had a huge smile on her face. She had flowers in her hair, in fact, June remembered the photo. It was one of the first days they had arrived in Hawaii. Betty had asked June to place flowers in her hair because it was her first official date with Red.

June looked away from the photo. She looked over and spotted Dorie Miller. She watched him salute to the coffin in front of him then turn to look at her. She nodded as he let a smile stretch his lips. June looked back at the coffin and ran her hand over the nicely spread flag.

"Bye, my darling." She whispered as she looked at Betty's smiling face.

She kneeled down next to Red and leaned her head on his shoulder. He looked over at her as he sobbed, then leaned his head on hers. After a few minutes, Red stood up and brought June into a quick hug.

"She got the best man she could have asked for." June whispered.

Red smiled as he pulled away. He nodded slowly as he walked away from the coffin. Finally, something felt right. Seeing a smile lifted June's heart. She grabbed Danny's hand and rested her head on his shoulder looking down at her friend. She smiled as memories of Betty's light flooded her mind. The amount of times Betty had pulled June out of grief with a silly comment. Or the night when Red proposed to her and June kissed Danny, how Betty had jumped around June like a little girl. Look at how far they had come. No one could have told her where she would be today. No could account for the amount of damage caused by the loss of one girl. Yet, the bruises will fade and the wounds will slowly heal, because time was on their side.
