Six months had passed since the attack on Pearl Harbor. The harbor was still haunted with silence. The girl's small house had been almost dead silent except for the few nights they spent together. The hospital was still filled with patients and most of the nurses found themselves working all day. June only saw Barbara and Sandra at dinner or early in the morning. Of course, her and Evelyn had spent a lot of their free time together as Danny and Rafe were gone.
June didn't know how she was doing it. Danny had been gone for three months. According to Sandra, the baby is due around early July. Due to the pregnancy June had been excused form most work at the hospital. She had been given a desk a few weeks ago and she had been filing away charts and giving a few shots here and there.
She wrote Danny every day and at the end of the week, she would send all eight letters together. She knew that they wouldn't reach him for a few weeks but she had no other way to talk to him. About every month she received a bundle of letters from Florida and every time she saw the manila papers tied with a string her heart soared.
Each letter was a mix of emotions. Sometime he would ask about the pregnancy or offer names for June to think about. Danny always started and ended the letters the same. The first and last thing he would always write was I love you. Usually, June and Evelyn would share their letters with each other. Of course, June still wrote Rafe, just not as often as she wrote Danny. Rafe's letters were similar to Danny's. It seemed that both of them had her pregnancy on their mind.
Evelyn had taken care of June for the past three months. Every since her stomach had grown past June's feet Evelyn helped her everywhere.
"Three more months," Evelyn said as she helped June to bed.
June smiled up at her as Evelyn walked to the desk. She handed June a bundle of letters and June smiled. Evelyn sat on the edge of her bed and slowly tore open her letter. June slowly untied the string and shuffled through the paper. She slowly opened a letter and quickly noticed a difference.
