"I live for your smile."

MIN YOONGI

"It's 5:32 pm." I say, setting down the tray besides her motionless body. "Guess what I made today."

She doesn't say anything. It's not like I expect her to— I've never heard her voice before. Never heard her talk before, not a single word.

"Open wide."

She shakes her head slowly, and I smile proudly when she reaches out for the bowl. Watching her bring the spoon to her lips is life to me.

"How is it?" I ask, wiping the corner of her pink lip with my thumb. "It's something new."

She puts down the spoon, chews emptily. Then the corner of her mouth tilts up the slightest degree, and I smile as wide as my lips can go.

"You think it's good?"

But that's the only sign she gives me before returning to her placid state, staring straight forward. She always stares over my shoulder.

"I'll be back in time for bed." I say, kissing her forehead.

"9:02 pm!"

When I walk through the doors, she's still in the same spot I'd left her. Not having moved a single inch.

"Time for bed, princess." I say quietly, smiling like always. Taking her delicate body into my arms, I put her down and tuck her in.

"Good night, okay?" I say, pointing at the moon-shaped nightlight. "Do you want me to leave this on?"

She doesn't say anything.

"Vera." Finally she turns, her eyes finding a bit of focus after hearing her name. "Do you want this on?"

She shakes her head so slightly I have to strain to notice.

"My brave little chipmunk." I say sweetly, patting her on top of her head. My fingers search for the switch of the nightlight, and flick it off.

"Good night."

My hand lingering on her soft cheek, it takes me a while to finally let go. Her eyes are finally on me this time, following me as I leave the room.

I shake her gently, whispering in her ear. The morning light coming through the closed curtains light the room dimly.

"Vera, it's 8:36 am. Time to wake up."

She tosses, her face scrunched. It makes me laugh, and I pinch her nose softly.

"I have breakfast ready for you— your favorite, actually. Blueberry pancakes. With chocolate chips. How about that, huh?"

I laugh out loud when her eyes fly open, and she sits up sluggishly.

"Pancakes for Vera." I show her the breakfast tray, and the plate piled with her favorite pancakes. "Enough to make you smile, yeah?"

She looks down at her hands, and smiles.

The sight is too cute for me to bear, and I watch her chew until she finishes eating. Her eyes keep flickering up to me, and it's a stunning warm brown.
