The first thing I noticed about Carrie is the fact that she looked just like my friend Clover. And then I realized.

Clover was a good friend of mine. Her family was in the police with my dad. She joined the force once she graduated the academy. She was always positive. She looked like someone who would be giving you a reason to look on the bright side with her bright red hair, even brighter green eyes, freckles and tendency to talk with her hands. It fit her. Being one-hundred precent Irish, the name Clover fit her so well. We used to joke about her being a leprechaun. But we'd always say her five foot ten self was just a bit too tall. The moment I heard Carrie's last name, I felt like crying. I knew the Kelley's were an amazing family, so they had to be gone. I could help but google them. That's when I did cry.

Carrie recognized me too.

Neither of us said anything.

Carrie is really smart. Like super smart.

I like having her around. She's made like five upgrades to her suit and she hasn't even gone out in the field yet.

Anyway, it's one if my switch weekends, when I go to stay with my dad for a few weeks.

That makes it sound like my parents are divorced. They're not, my mom isn't alive, though.

I say goodbye to everyone and hop into my dad's car.

"So," I say when we get home. "There's a new girl a the mansion." Yeah, I'm being passive aggressive but that's just who I am.

"I'm aware." Dad runs his hands through his hair. He knows what I'm doing. "I was there when he took her in."

"You called him, didn't you?"

"Yes, I did." Dad's always known of Bruces tendency to adopt orphans who saw their families die.

"When were you going to tell me?"

"Would you have preferred I came over and made the girl relieve it?"

"I'd have preferred a phone call to finding out myself. We were on their trail and we called you in. Maybe if we didn't do that-"

"It's not your fault Babs."

"Yeah, I guess."
