And here we are. Two weeks into her training and her first patrol. I am almost positive she's ready, though I have asked her a lot.

She's extremely intelligent, she made a lot of small adjustments to her suit. She stitched part of her cape to her sleeve to make a glider.

Pretty neat.

Lucius helped her get a google type mask with her glasses prescription for her to use. She fixed them up with night vision, zooming, heat vision, and a bit of info red vision. Like I said, she's extremely intelligent.

"Last chance to step out, Kid," I say, adjusting my glove. I've called all of the kids "Kid" ever since Bruce took in Dick.

"Not a chance." Carrie pulls the goggles out of their case and put them on.

"You want a wig?" I asks. I have a wig attached to my cowl, for multiple reasons. I'm asking since Carrie's red fussed pixie cut isn't a common hair style, unlike the boys completely generic black haircuts.

"Hell no," she says. She squats down next to her backpack on the floor of the cave and rummages

Alfred whispers to me, "she's like you."

I roll my eyes. Carrie pulls a small container of hair gel out of her bag and slicks back her hair. Smart.

Steph has something to do tonight and Duke has something too, so they're not coming on this patrol.

"Split up," Bruce says, "Tim, go with Dick, West to Clinton. I'll go with Babs, Avon to Sween. Damian and Cass-"

"Hah, you have a babysitter," Tim teases.

"I will murder you," Damian threatens.

"Hey, shut," I warn.

"-Phantom to Brooklyn. And Kate?" Bruce looks at me. I know that look.

"I've got her. Fifth to Dent." I nod at Carrie. She looks like she might smile but she just nods.

"Okay, let's move out."

<**>

"Carrie, look up," I say, pointing upward.

She does so, "looks like a starless city sky. Not too different than what I've seen before."

"No, not stars, though those would be cool. Look over there," I point into the distance. About where the police station is.

"Yeah?" Carrie asks, her voice dropping a small bit of the snark that's been there for the past few weeks.

"The signal isn't on." I drop my hand.

"So, why are we out here?" She looks at me.

"Well," I say as I jump from the roof we were standing on to the slightly lower one next to us.  She stares at me. "First of all, you can make it." Which she did. "Second of all, a lot of things happen because the police are called too late."

Like what happened to her family.

<**>

I mutter a swear under my breath. "Get down," I whisper to Carrie.

"What?" She whispers as we get behind a wall.

"Catwoman," I point toward said woman, standing on a roof near us. "Batwoman, calling for backup, Dent and Winters."

I hear Bruce's modulated voice crackle in my ear piece. "Who?"

"Who do you think?" I say back.

He sighs. "I'm coming."

I stifle a laugh, through a little slips out. Carrie looks at me puzzled. "You'll fine out in a bit."

"Okay, I guess." She shurgs.

The whole gang shows up and we end up sort of cornering Catwoman. She makes eye contact with Carrie.

"Oh, you pulled another orphan off the streets I see."

We didn't catch her.

Not the first time.
