I busily walked around, checking the house frantically. Furniture, check. Mirrors, check. Windows, check. Floors, check.
Men bustled around, moving sofas, chairs, and tables. They were carefully draping white sheets over every piece of furniture in the manor.
I bustled through every room, checking everything was in order. When I found the house to my satisfaction, or rather, my father's satisfaction, I stepped into the courtyard to meet the rest of my family.
My father, Nakasaka Uraraka, was standing beside the fountain talking with Mrs Todoroki, who was very sweet, and her husband. My stepmother, Ichioka Uraraka was clinging to father's arm, looking miserable indeed. Most likely because she was leaving her exquisite manor into something considerably smaller.
Ichioka turned grimly toward me.
"Ah, here's Ochaco," she told father. Father turned his attention to me seeming rather reluctant.
"Well, child?" He demanded.
"Everything is in order," I replied, "we are ready."
My parents sighed.
"That's that then," Ichioka practically moaned.
"Now, Mrs Yaoyorozu, you said you knew who was renting the estate? I know a couple is, but I'm not sure of their last names," Father explained, facing the dark-haired lady across from him. She nodded vigorously.
"I've been told the Kiyoshi's are taking it," she said.
I suppressed a choke.
"W-who?" I gasped, trying to make sure I'd heard her right. Mrs Todoroki smiled brightly.
"The Kiyoshi's!" She repeated.
"Just Admiral and Mrs Kiyoshi?" I inquired, dreading the worst. My fears were confirmed.
"Oh, no. Apparently, Mrs Kiyoshi's brother, Captain Midoriya, is back from sea and will be staying with them," she chatted, happily.
I stared. No. She couldn't mean it. She was clearly misinformed. Deku had gone to sea eight years ago, and no one knew where he was. Well, no one that I was acquainted with. And my Godmother, Lady Midnight, knew everything when it came to gossip.
"Admiral Kiyoshi?" Father spat, only just registering what Mrs Todoroki had said, "ADMIRAL?!"
"Why, yes," Mrs Todoroki grinned, "it is delightful."
"I would beg to differ!" Father raged, "Disgusting, how the Navy is an excuse for those of the lower class to worm their way to wealth and high status!"
Mrs Todoroki laughed.
"I've heard that Captain Midoriya acts and looks quite the upper-class man," she said, "But it is said that he is now incredibly rich. Apparently worth thousands of pounds!"
"How interesting," Father drawled, still quite angry, "This Captain Midoriya seems a git."
Father had clearly either forgotten Captain Midoriya, and the affair with his daughter, or he didn't care. Likely the latter.
"Well, Dear," Ichioka said, "We really don't have much choice in the matter of who rents the estate."
Father growled.
"I still - Ochaco, where are you going?!" He shouted.
"Oh, urrr, last-minute checks," I lied, "I think I may have forgotten a room."
Ichioka looked exasperated.
"Then hurry up child. We don't have all day," she snapped.
Nodding, I dashed from that garden as fast as my legs would carry me without running. I couldn't. I couldn't do it. Deku wasn't coming back, he wasn't!
