After track practice on Monday, I was out of breath, lying down on the grass. I was waiting for Marisol, as she was talking with Coach Taryn.
I thought back to what she told me this weekend. She felt the need to be perfect. Was that why she acted weirdly nice to me back when we first met, even though I was rude to her?
The sun shone brightly, warming my skin. The grass swayed in the breeze. For once, life seemed perfect. I closed my eyes, drinking in the moment. I was content with it all.
A shadow fell over me. "Are you sleeping?" Marisol nudged my side with her sneaker.
"Totally," I said, standing up and brushing off the dirt.
"Then wake up," Marisol laughed. She took my hand and we walked off together, on our normal route home.
It was nice how we could hold hands and no one would think much of it. They'd think we were just two best friends. Marisol and I knew it was more than that, though. It was like our little secret.
"Hey Penny," Marisol said, a blush rising to her cheeks.
"Yeah?" I asked, butterflies fluttering in my stomach. Something about her tone made me nervous.
"Will you... uh... do you wanna... be my girlfriend?" Marisol asked, biting her lip.
I stared at her in shock for a moment. She sighed, looking down.
"Of course," I yelled, beaming. Marisol's head snapped up to me, her eyes wide open.
She breathed a sigh of relief. "I was worried you'd reject me for a minute there."
I shook my head. "I'd never reject you."
She grinned. I always thought her smile was beautifully bright.
"I have a girlfriend!" She cheered, spinning in a circle.
I laughed at her antics. "You wanna know something?" I asked.
"What?"
"Your smile is as bright as the," I racked my brain for the word. "Sol."
She giggled. "My smile is as bright as the sol," she whispered to herself.
I swung our intertwined hands back and forth. "You're my sol," I said.
Marisol beamed, pulling me in for a kiss in the middle of the sidewalk.
"Si soy tu sol, eres mi luna," she whispered, tickling my ear.
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"If I'm your sun, you're my moon."
I blushed.
We kept walking and after a few minutes, we reached her house. I reculctantly let go of her hand and watched her go in. I waved and then continued to my house. I bounded up the stairs, still giddy.
"What's got you all excited?" Andrew asked, peeking out of his doorway.
I couldn't help but blab. "I'm officially someone's girlfriend!"
His eyes went wide and he whistled. "Who's the lucky guy?"
I shrugged, not meeting his eyes. He didn't know I was gay, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to change that.
"C'mon, you can tell me!" He goaded.
He seemed so happy for me though, it was hard to imagine he'd dissaprove of Marisol. Her face popped into my mind and I couldn't help but grin.
That stupid smile grew on my face. "She's a girl," I breathed.
Andrew's mouth fell open. "You're gay?"
