Transporting and Worry: Chapter 53

  About twenty minutes later, they are bringing in the first of the patients from the air ambulance as Dr. Early, Dixie, Dr. Morton and other hospital staff are waiting for them by the entrance.

"This is the M.I. and this one is the head injury" Gage says to Dr. Early.

"Bring him to treatment two." Dr. Early says as he checks the data scope as the next gurney comes in. "Head injury to three."

"This is the bronchitis patient and this one injured her hip." DeSoto says as he enters with them.

Dr. Morton looks at both and then says, "Put them both in Treatment one.

Gage follows Dr. Early into treatment two and helps with the M.I. patient.

They transfer him to a bed and the nurse begins to take his vitals.

"Pulse is 88, respiration is 24 and blood pressure is 140 over 90." Nurse Carol says.

"I want a twelve-lead EKG on him. Also chest films." Dr. Early says

"Doc, do you need me anymore?" Gage asks Dr. Early.

"No Johnny. Thanks." Dr. Early says to him and than puts all of his attention onto the patient.

"Ok see ya later Doc." Gage says as he grabs the oxygen tank and drug box before exiting the room.

Dr. Brackett is in treatment three with the head injury.

"Nurse, get me the 4-0 suture tray. Then order a skull series and draw blood for a CBC." Dr. Brackett orders.

"Yes Doctor." Nurse Mascia says to him.

"You're going to be fine." Dr. Brackett says reassuring Mr. Matthews. "Roy, why don't you check on Mike and see if he needs a hand. I got it from here. Thanks for the help."

Roy nods his head and exists the treatment room and heads to one.

Opening the door, he finds Dr. Morton working on the other two patients.

"Doc, need any help?" Roy says as he walks into the room.

"No Roy, I got it. Thanks." Dr. Morton says to him

Roy walks towards the older lady with the hip injury and says, "You're in good hands now. I'll check in with you later."

"Thank you sonny." The older lady says to Roy as he smiles and than walks over to check on the bronchitis patient before leaving the room.

The hospital is still dark and running on generators as Roy runs into Dixie in the hallway.

"Are you and Johnny going back to Station 44?" Dixie asks as they make their way down the hallway towards the nurses' desk.

"Yeah, they want us there until the roads open up again. They think that's going to be another day or two." Roy says to her as he sees John walking towards them.

John gets to the nurses' station and Roy asks, "How's Hank doing?"

"He's got a chance. How about the scalp injury?" John asks.

"He's going to be fine too." Roy says. "Let's get some more supplies before we leave again."

"Yeah ok." Johnny says as he pulls his cell phone out of his pocket to check for messages from Tracie when he sees one.

Opening the message he begins to read it and his facial expression changes dramatically.

Roy sees the change and asks, "Is everything alright Johnny?"

"Not sure, Tracie says Marissa was sick today, running a temp. I'm going to call her. Can you get the supplies? I just need a few minutes." Johnny says waiting for a response.
