“Jack.” I breathed shocked to see him.  There he was standing before me with his hands in his pocket.

“Violet” he said while staring intensely at me.  “Dance with me.”  And before I knew it, I was in Jack’s arms swaying to the music.  It didn’t matter that they were playing ragtime, and we were the only couple not Lindy hopping.

Intense longing wrenched my gut, as I breathed in Jack’s scent.  Memories of the feelings that Jack had evoked in me during our brief time together three years ago flooded through me, and I felt sudden happiness at seeing him again.

“You’ve been here all night.” I whispered in his ear.  “Why didn’t you come over?”

“You looked like you had plenty of company.”  He said with a speculative look on his face.  “But I did enjoy watching you dance.”

“Freddie and I are just friends.”

For some reason I wanted to explain to Jack my relationship with Freddie.  “We are both pilots.”

“Ah, I see.” Jack said smiling.

“How are you here of all places?”  I asked.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”  Jack said.

“Try me” I asked arching my brow.

“I came here to shut this joint down.”  Jack deadpanned.

“What?” I exclaimed looking up at him.

“I’m a Federal Prohibition Agent.”

Never would I have imagined Jack being a Prohibition Agent.

“I could arrest you, you know.” Jack whispered softly while bringing me closer to his chest.

“Well what’s stopping you.” I retorted turning red at the thought.

“Oh, Violet I think you know the answer to that.”  Jack said becoming serious all of a sudden.

“I don’t want to keep you from doing your job.”  I teased him.

“Violet, you shouldn’t be here.  These joints can be dangerous.”  Jack said trying to reason with me.  “Where is the chap that you came with?”

“Freddie left, but there is somebody else who is going to drive me back.”  I said defensively.
