“No one, Jack.” I murmured. “That’s how it should be. No one to worry.”
“Violet.” Jack caressed my cheek and cupped my chin. “I worry.”
“Because this is the life I choose.” I said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Jack’s eyes were dark and intense when he kissed me. The kiss started out sweet and firm, but turned passionate when I was seized with such longing that I reached around Jack’s neck and pulled him further into me. Our tongues met as they played a lover’s dance. Jack tasted salty yet sweet. Jack’s lips moved down to my neck. My head was tilted back and my lids drooped heavily against my eyes. I wanted Jack. I wanted him skin to skin. I wanted him inside me. As his hand slipped under my shirt, to cup my breasts, I sighed. I could love this man I thought.
Thoughts of love for Jack were like cold water being poured over my skin. I reacted like I had been shocked. “Jack, stop.” I said pushing myself away from him. “We can’t do this.”
I turned away from him and headed into the parlor. “I’m flying away in the morning and will never see you again.” I said to eradicate the tender feelings I was feeling toward Jack.
“It doesn’t have to be this way, Vi.” Jack said while gripping the edges of the door silently watching me. “You have a choice. I’ve never met anybody like you and don’t want to lose you.”
“Jack you are handsome and kind. Any woman would be glad to have you.”
“Let me at least stay in contact with you, Vi.” He sighed and headed towards my place on the sofa. “I don’t want to lose you since I just met you.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” I said glumly. “In fact I should probably be going to bed. It’s late.”
Jack stared at me for long moments, and then said. “You can have my room. I’ll sleep on the sofa.”
“I don’t mind sleeping on the sofa. I’ve already intruded too much today.”
“Damn it Violet. Just go take my room.” Said Jack indignantly. “I’m no gentleman and I’ll only offer once. I think we should finish what we started in the kitchen.” He said as his eyes burned.
My cheeks turned so red that you could probably even see red running through my scalp. I scuttled around the sofa and down the hall to the only bedroom I had seen earlier. I even locked the door. I huddled down onto the bed and nervously glanced at my reflection in the mirror.
My cheeks were rosy and my eyes bright. God, I thought I look like I’m infatuated with the man. I needed to leave first thing in the morning, and fast. I went to the window and glanced out. Night had set in across the rolling pastures and the rain was down to a drizzle. I prayed that the morning would bring clear weather. I crawled under the covers and smelled Jack all around me in the sheets and on his pillow. I breathed in the scent I had come to know as Jack. I sighed and went to sleep.
Rays of sunshine crawled through the windows and momentarily blinded me. As I woke up in a strange bed and place, I was disoriented. Then realization dawned on me, and I jumped out of bed. I wen t to the windows and looked out. It was a clear and sunny day. Hopefully, the plane had dried off some before I was ready to leave. As I turned towards the dresser, I noticed that my flying clothes were laid out across it. They were clean and dry. “Jack” I breathed. I remembered locking the door the night before. He must have a key. I flushed at the thought of him coming in and seeing me asleep.
I dressed quickly and then went down the hall to the bathroom. No sign of Jack. I went in and relieved myself, washed my hands and splashed my face. I fingered combed my hair which was curling around my head since I had gone to bed with it wet. Once I left the bathroom, I could smell frying bacon and eggs. I went into the kitchen and Jack was huddled over the stove. “Good Morning, Violet.” He said without even turning around. “Sleep well.” He said with a smile.
“Very well.” I replied. “Thanks for laying out my clothes.” I teased.
“Always a pleasure, Violet.” He winked at me.
Jack was going to be hard to leave behind, but I knew that I must without looking back. A plate filled with bacon, scrambled eggs, and biscuits was placed in front of me. My stomach grumbled very unladylike I know, but it smelled divine. He sat across from me and handed me my coffee. “Thanks for the breakfast, Jack.” I said shoveling my mouth full of eggs. “Delicious.”
I realized how much Jack had cared for me during my time here. It had been so nice. “You’ve spoiled me Jack with your cooking.” I said with a smile. “It’s going to be hard going back to sandwiches and baked potatoes.”
“I could always cook for you, Vi.” Jack said looking suddenly very serious. Not knowing what to say, I looked down and continued to eat. We ate the rest of our breakfast in silence.
Jack began to clear the tables and I instantly stood up to help him. He looked over at me and said, “I’ll wash and you dry.” We worked together in companionable silence. Once all the breakfast plates were washed and dried,
I turned to Jack and said. “Well Jack I guess I need to be going.”
Jack looked sad when he asked, “Can I at least ask for your address?”
I gave Jack a grim smile, “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Thanks for everything.”
I grabbed my skull cap, goggles, and put my feet in my boots ready to leave. “You owe me at least a kiss, Vi.” And then he grabbed me by my arm and with a quick turn I was in his arms. He gazed into my eyes and I instantly felt electricity run up my arms and legs. Then he kissed me. I grabbed his neck and opened my mouth to his seeking tongue. I burned for him, and knew that I needed to let him go.
“Be careful no matter what you do, Violet.” He murmured in my ear, and then he released me.
We gazed intensely at each other, but I was the one to break the gaze. “Goodbye, Jack.” I said as I walked out the door to my plane. I never glanced back.
I took off without a hitch and circled the barn for one last glance of Jack from the air. As I circled, I swept low and banked to the left. A lone figure stood outside the doorway, and I waved to him. He waved back. I was off. The weather was beautiful and perfect for finishing a trip I should have made the previous day. I made it to Candler Field Airport without a hitch. Once I landed and the mail was delivered I felt so much better.
