"Audrey, be careful with the damn vase!"
Mama yells from the porch. Audrey heaves the delicate item onto the moving van.
"I'm done! Mommy can we get McDonalds?"
"You got McDonalds money?" I holler.
"Shut up, Nia!"
I carry my boxes of science awards to the van and take a sip of my water. Why did we have to move in the middle of summer?
"Mama, I'm hot."
"We only have 5 more boxes, baby."
I sit on the porch swing. So many memories on this thing. Good and bad.
"Get your a-s-s up." Bryson says to me.
"Ooooo, Bryson said a cussie!"
"I didn't, I spelled it out."
"Imma have to go on Audrey side for this one."
Mama walks up to Bryson and whispers something in his ear. His eyes go wide and he walks away pissed.
"I got the last box!"
Audrey runs in the house and gets the box.
"No, I can get it," I start.
A big crash comes from the kitchen.
"Audrey Alexis Greene, if my prized china is broken then I am going to slap the daylights out of you." Mama yells.
I walk up the porch to see what happened. Mama's right behind me.
"Oh, Audrey, I was bouta say,"
"Be more careful, Audrey." Mama says, relieved.
"Sorry, Mommy,"
Mama takes the box off the counter and walks to the car.
"Nia, clean up that glass. Don't want the landlord complaining."
Ughhh. I put my purse on the counter and grab the broom. I sweep up the broken cup before anybody gets hurt. By the time I finish, everybody is already comfortable in the vehicles we're bringing on the journey. I grab my purse and walk out of the house.
"Imma miss you." I say to the house.
From my first laugh to my first kiss, this house has seen, heard and smelled everything.
I get in the passenger seat of the moving van. Bryson gets in next to me."Mama, you ready?"
Bryson shouts behind us to Mama, who's in her car she's bringing to New York.
"Yes, Bryson! Now drive!"
"Alright."
We pull out of the driveway and away from the memories. Bryson sees my sad face.
"Hey, y'know Ma got this nice brownstone up in Bedford Stuyvesant."
"Mmm," I grumble.
