Aphmau stood on the stage next to the gallows, a solemn look resting on her face. Aaron stood at her side, arm around her waist and hand rubbing her hip in a reassuring manner.
Katelyn stepped up from beside of her friend, open book in her hand as she gazed down at everyone.
"As sheriff, I will lead this weeks lynching as usual. You all know that this must be done. The discussion will begin with witnesses and questioning. Those who believe they know who the wolves are may now step forward and plea their case" She announced, reading out what was on the page she had opened to.
She stepped back as a low murmur rippled through the gathered crowd, everyone wondering who would be mentions and brought to trial.
"I believe I know the identity of one of the wolves!" Someone called out, hesitantly stepping up. A dark haired male with a familiar blue stripe in his fringe.
Aphmau perked up at the sight of Ein. They had known each other for a while and she trusted him. They were friends after all.
"Last night, I... saw something through the curtains that Sasha had left open. I heard a commotion going on and I noticed that there was a beast within her home. Gene was nowhere in sight and I heard Sasha scream his name. Not only that, but there was another beast. One that attacked the one in Sasha's home. On the shoulder I believe. I heard the Gene was staying with her last night so..." Ein trailed off, holding back the grin that wanted to creep onto his lips.
A few collective gasps were heard around the plaza, but no one truly seemed that surprised. Well, Zane looked furious but that was to be expected.
"Do you have proof of these two beasts, or that Gene is indeed a Werewolf? Did anyone else see this or hear this? If so, step forward now" Katelyn stated. She didn't like Gene, but she didn't want to condemn the man to death unless she had a proper reason to, not just one person's claim.
After a few moments, someone shuffled forward, a sweet woman with pale pink hair, holding her pregnant belly through her dress.
"Katelyn~Sama, Kawaii~Chan also saw it" she piped up after a moment, looking up at her close friend. Katelyn and her had lived together for a few years before she had moved in with Ein, her husband and mate. They were still terribly close friends and she knew that she would trust her.
Usually, she wouldn't lie because she hated doing so, but she didn't want to upset Ein. That was a death wish since he was the alpha, and just generally a scary being.
Katelyn's harsh expression softened a little at the sight of the pinkette, giving a slight nod at her words. "Anyone else?" She called out. Two people might be enough, but they lived in the same house so that wasn't too surprising that they were claiming to see and hear the same things.
She had never trusted Ein since the moment he went for her friend, but she held a little faith in him since Aphmau was friends with him as well.
"If that is all for the claim of Gene, then I will ask if anyone else is believed to be a wolf" she sighed after a few moments of no one stepping up.
"What about about Zenix or Sasha? Those two were always snakey" someone called out.
Katelyn rolled her eyes and closed the book, turning to sit down. "For the last time, we will not lynch them unless you can give us conclusive evidence that they are what you claim. They may not be good people, but they're human as far as well can tell" she growled out.
Just about every week those two got nominated but they definitely seemed human.

"If that is all, we will now consult with one another and look into the claims made in Gene. Everyone may return to their homes and you will know by the end of the night if he will be sent to the gallows" she announced before turning to Aphmau and Aaron, Zane climbing up into the platform, obviously pissed."Like hell Gene is one of those things! He was just attacked last night" he huffed, Aphmau meeting him halfway. She wanted to believe him, but someone needed to be accused by the end of the night.
"I believe you, Zane, I really do, but until Aaron checks him, we can't rule him out" she murmured, wrapping her arms around him to pull him into a tight hug, which he slowly returned.
Zane knew that his lover wasn't a beast. He trusted Sasha to tell him the truth despite their past together, and he knew Gene wouldn't lie to him, at least about something like this.
Aphmau could see the worry on her friend's face, well, what wasn't covered by the mask and hair. She took his hand and led him off the platform, Aaron and Katelyn following close behind.
They entered her home, Aaron already taking a seat in the center of the living room, Zane taking a seat across from him as Aphmau sat beside over he husband. Katelyn stood off to the side, giving them space to work. As the main figure of authority in the town, she was one of the final people who knew of Aaron and what he could do.
Aaron looked across to his apprentice, unsure if he wanted to do this. What if Gene was a werewolf? It would completely crush Zane. Zane was completely in love with Gene, even if he hid how much he liked him from the world. There probably wasn't anyone else he had stronger feelings for besides Aphmau.
"Aaron, please... just get on with it" Zane finally growled out, making the older give a slight nod.
He carefully went to work, conjuring up the image of Gene swirling within the summoned smoke, digging deep to find what he was.
After a few moments, something else appeared on top of his image. The face of a snarling and withering wolf within the dark cloud.
The tell sign of a werewolf...
