The view beyond the car window was not that impressive to look at, but Y/n still let her eyes wonder about. She counted the number of mountain tops. Seven.
She counted the trees. Four.
"Hmph," The bored sigh escaped her lips and made her father watch her in the rear-view mirror, that was surprisingly still attached to the roof of the car.
Her father wasn't a bad person. Not at all. He was just a... dad, I guess. He gets really agitated whenever he's behind the wheel and gets tons of speeding tickets. Then, he gets angry because he got a parking ticket. And the cycle resets.
Normally, it would make her laugh whenever her dad yelled out a stupid slur at a passing car, but Y/n was too tired to exercise her face muscles.
She had been sitting in the car since 8 o'clock in the morning and had told her dad she wanted to sleep in the car for a while, although she couldn't make her brain stop thinking about every little unsolved question. Y/n was sitting in the back row behind her dad's seat, since sitting in front meant having to hold up a social interaction, and also because she could stretch her whole body and use the seats as an uncomfortable leather bed. Her eyelids felt heavy and ready to close, but the rest of her body refused. The past couple of minutes she had tried to fall asleep by doing the oldest trick in the book, but counting just didn't cut it.
Her headphones had been playing her favourite playlist for a while, which obviously didn't help her with her restlessness either.
She was at that stage where nothing phased her anymore. Sad indie songs enslaved her body and made her feel useless. The setting sun didn't help her gloomy mood either.
Her muscles screamed with joy when she finally felt too tired to hold her eyes open and she fell asleep.
Until the shrieking of tires woke her up. Moments later, the vehicle abruptly stopped when it smashed into something heavy. The seatbelt had carved itself into the skin on her neck and she clumsily clicked it open, since it felt like she was caught in an anaconda's embrace.
"GODDAMNIT! WHAT A STUPID MORON!" her dad yelled.
"Dad, that's a tautology-" she said groggily.
"I know, honey!! Let daddy be angry!" he screamed.
He stepped out of his car to what she supposed would be the rock he hit or something. Y/n ran a hand through her hair and checked the time. It was 9:21, she had only been asleep for a couple of minutes, 15 minutes at most.
Muffled yelling filled her eardrums as she decided to step outside the car to calm her father down.
As soon as she opened the car door, she wished she had stayed in the car because the yelling was unbearable for her tired head. "If only Mom was here..." she thought to herself.
Her father had taken her on a road trip through Japan, while her mother was at a conference overseas. Whatever her dad did, he always brought misfortune along with him.
Like that time he promised her mother that he would make a difficult dish for Mother's Day. Long story short, the kitchen almost caught fire, and against his will, he ordered take-out food, which was way better in Y/n's opinion.
