It was total chaos. Bombs were being dropped everywhere and there was no telling what would happen next.
Mrs.Pevensie was waking up her children- Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy. They all were about to safely escape from their house, when Edmund suddenly cried, "Dad!" and ran back into the house.
Mrs.Pevensie shouted,"Edmund! Get Away from there! What do you think you're doing?!"
Peter went after his brother cursing under his breath. Edmund just grabbed his father's picture, the frame broken and Peter pounced on him, both of them diving into the ground, as the glass of the windows suddenly smashed.
They both ran to their family and Peter shouted angrily, shoving him,"Why can't you ever do as you're told?! You Idiot! Why do you always have to be so selfish?!"
***
The next day, after bidding their mother goodbye, the Pevensie siblings boarded the train along with thousands of other children, to reach the countryside just to be safe from the random attacks of the brutal World War ll.
Once they reached their destination, they stood waiting.
"The professor knew we were coming?" Susan inquired.
"Perhaps we've been incorrectly labelled?" Edmund said, looking at the label on his sweater.
They all saw a middle-aged woman, wearing glasses, coming to them.
Peter asked,"Mrs.Macready?"
She replied,"I'm afraid so. Is that it then? Haven' you brought anythin' else?"
"No ma'am. It's just us."
"Small favours." She noted.
The ride to the professor's mansion was particularly pleasant. They could hear the chirping of birds and the pleasant wind rustled their hair.
Once they reached, they were awestruck. The mansion was enormous with a beautiful lawn and huge rooms.
Mrs.Macready said in a matter-of-fact tone, "The professor is unaccustomed to havin' children in the house, and as such, there are a few rules we need to follow. There will be no shoutin' or runnin', no improper use of the dumbwaiter."
Susan went to touch an artifact, only to hear, "NO touching of historical artifacts!!" from a very angry Mrs.Macready.
They all looked at each other trying to control their laughter and followed her, as she continued, "and above all, there shall be no disturbin' the professor."
They all turned round a corner to see a young girl, around their age, wearing glasses, her jet-black hair tied into a neat ponytail, her height around Susan's, with books in her hand, walking towards them. Susan's eyes widened on noticing the brunette girl with them.
"Susan!"
"Anna!" They exclaimed together. They ran towards each other, grinning and hugged.
"I can't believe it! You're the guests?!", the girl asked.
The others looked at them confused. The Pevensie siblings had never seen their shy sister so close to anyone. But Peter and Edmund recognised her almost immediately. She was Annalisa Aurelia Williams - The most admired girl in their class and Susan's best friend. Almost everyone looked up to her.
"Of course. I didn't know you lived here too." An ecstatic Susan replied.
"Yes well.. I'm have been living with the professor since I was 6." She chuckled.
Susan turned around to look at her siblings and said, "This is Annalisa, a friend from school." She then, looked at Anna and introduced everyone.
"This is Peter" he shook hands with her. "This is Lucy"she smiled brightly at her. "And this is Edmund" he just scowled angrily at Susan and said,"I can introduce myself you know!"
Susan simply glared at him as Anna said,"It's very nice to finally meet all of you. Susan tells me many things about all of you."
Mrs.Macready cleared her throat and turned to Anna, "Ms.Williams, please show them to their rooms and do so without any ruckus." She spat the last word out and turned away.
Anna sighed, "Come on" she said and they followed her as she took them to their rooms assigned.
"Well.. Mrs. Macready seems in an oddly good mood today, does she not?" a voice said.
They all whipped their heads towards the source of the sound to see a boy, no younger than ten, standing with the help of leg braces and walking sticks. His raven-coloured hair was brushed back and messy and his sea-green eyes had a mysterious and dull-look to them.
Anna smiled, "Hamish!" She turned towards them and said, "This is Hamish, my younger brother."
"I didn't know you had a younger brother." Peter said.
"I told you! Did you forget already?" Susan nudged him.
Hamish just looked at them and then at Anna with a calm expression.
"Friend of yours?" He asked as she nodded and he looked at them.
"Well.. if you keep driving Mrs. Macready crazy like that she will make sure your time here will be equally dreadful."
They looked mortified.
"I'll be in my room" he said and walked away.
Anna just shook her head and explained in seeing their confused expressions, "He's has paraplegia. Diagnosed with it since he turned four. Hasn't really been easy on him. He does not have many friends either, because of his antisocial ideologies."
They said nothing but only thanked her as they reached their rooms. The sun set with them trying to unpack their clothes with the radio still broadcasting to them about the terrible bombings consistently going on, back in their home in Finchley and Winston Churchill's strong speech of motivation. Lucy went to bed first as Peter and Susan sat on her bed.
"The sheets feel scratchy..", she said sadly, lying on the bed.
"Don't worry, it'll be alright soon. Wars don't last forever, Lucy." Anna said, who had come in silently and was leaning on the doorframe. She walked to her bed and tucked her in.
"We'll be home soon." Susan joined in.
"If home's still there." Edmund replied, snarking.
Susan glared at him and said, "Isn't it time you were bed?"
"Yes Mum!" said Edmund, his face red with anger and marched away.
"ED!" Peter shouted angrily.
"Don't worry. He'll calm down. Must be homesick." Anna said, looking at Susan and Peter.
Peter looked at her thankfully and turned to Lucy and said, "You saw outside. This place is huge. We will be able to do whatever we want. Tomorrow's going to be great, really."
