I'm late.
I cannot be late for my first day at a new school. I run to my mom's car as fast as I can and get in. We drive to school in complete silence. Ever since the divorce my mom and I have drifted apart. We no longer laugh the way we used to or just talk. She is always busy with work and no longer has time for me. We get to school right in time and I say bye to her, but she doesn't hear me because she is on the phone.
The school is big and really beautiful. It has a gorgeous water fountain in the front. I look up and read the sign at the top of the doorway, "Green Valley High." I walk in and I am speechless there is a large staircase in the middle of the hall rimmed with gold. Students fill each and every corner of the large hall. I try to move through the many people so I can find the headmistress's office. I finally see a sign leading to it and I walk over there. But as I walk there I bump into someone. "Oh, I'm sorry," I mumble. "Don't worry its's totally my fault. I wasn't watching where I was going." I look up and I see the bluest eyes I have ever seen. I just stand there staring at those eyes like an idiot. " I haven' seen you around. Are you new?" the boy with blue eyes asks me in a British accent that can make any girl swoon. "Yeah," is all I manage to say. Then I suddenly snap out of it. I cannot fall for this stranger I have never met. "Yeah, I'm heading to the office." The boy looks surprised for a split second and then he says to me, "Oh me too. I'll walk you." As we start walking a million things go through my mind. "I'm guessing you're not from around here." He suddenly asks. I retaliate saying, "What makes you think that?" "Well, you have an American accent," he answers. Before I could say something back we make it to the headmistress' office. "Ah, lovely to meet you Ms. Warner," a lady says extending her hand as we enter. "Um, nice to meet you too um." Sensing my cluelessness she says, "Oh, my name is Headmistress Stratford." I nod at the boy and walk into her office.
"I see you have already met Lucas." Lucas, I think confused. Oh then I realize who she is talking about and I shake my head yes. "He is going to be your tour guide for the next week. Feel free to ask him anything. He knows this school like the back of his hand." Then she gave me my class schedule. "Um, Mrs. I mean Headmistress Stratford when do we have sign-ups for the um the photography club?" I ask. " All club sign-ups are in a week and sports sign-ups are tomorrow," she responds with a smile. We walk out of the office and meet Lucas. "Lucas this is Clare Warner and Clare this is Lucas." He smiles at me showing his dimples. his eyes are something of beauty in the sun I think. No, I cannot fall for him. Headmistress then tells us that we are both excused from our first classes so Lucas can give me the tour of the school.
I try to keep my head down as we walk out of the office. I do not want to look at him because then I have to see his eyes and then my heart flutters a little. I need to keep a low profile at this school. I know Headmistress Stratford said I could ask him anything but I don't think I can. "So what's your story?"He finally breaks the awkward silence. "My story?" I ask startled by him talking to me. " What do you mean my story? I don't have a story." "Come on everyone has a story."
Well, I actually do have a story I think. "My name is Clare Elle Warner and I am fifteen years old. All my life I lived in New York until my mom got a job offer here in England. We then packed up everything and moved. I now live with my mom and older brother, Max. My parents divorced when I was ten and I stayed with my mom and my dad went off with his new family. Yeah, it sucks but I got it better than most." I then realize I wasn't thinking those things instead they were coming out of my mouth. I blush a deep red. " See I told you everyone has a story," Lucas says amused. Oh good lord. This cannot be happening. I cannot let him do this to me. How can this boy just come up to me and make my heart leap for joy?
