Chapter 9
I stretched out my arm reaching for Austin but he wasn't there, I sat up alarmed. I looked at the alarm clock.
"Eleven? I'm late!" I threw my legs out of my bed, stood up and "Ouch!"
Okay, Lexi, you can do this. You've had a lot worse, like getting hit by a car or drowning. I thought to myself. I hopped whilst balancing on anything I could hold onto. Lucky jumped up at me when I reached the doorway.
"Down Lucky, no" I fell over trying not to stand on him, "Ow! Great, just fantastic!"
"Lexi? Are you alright dear?" Yasmin yelled from the bottom of the stairs.
"Yeah, where's Austin?" I asked sliding on my bum down the stairs.
"He popped to the doctors to get something for your ankle. Oh and your father is working on that case until Christmas eve." Yasmin smiled at me.
"What?" I said pulling myself and getting ready to hop.
"Oh, nothing." She walked into the kitchen letting me struggle to follow her. "Can you still help me pack? Your father bought boxes the other day."
"Yeah, sure. I'll get changed when Austin comes home, he can help me get up the stairs." I grabbed a box and asked, "So what do you want to be packed first?"
"Um... okay, pack everything in the living room please." She disappeared for a moment and returned with a marker pen and some tape and scissors, "here you'll need these."
Two hours later and half the living room was packed, I was bum shuffling across the floor. I was covered in bubble wrap and tape. The front door opened and closed.
"Yasmin, I'm back!" It was Austin.
"In the living room." She said laying on the sofa, letting me do the hard work.
"What the heck are you doing?" Austin was taken aback.
"Packing? Like we promised?"
"Yeah, I know that, but I was going to do it because you can't. How did you even get down the stairs?" He placed the bags on a chair.
"Well I hopped around my room, Lucky tripped me up, then I slid on my bum down the stairs, hopped to the kitchen and then to the living room and now I'm bum shuffling on the floor." I said casually.
Austin bit his lip trying not to laugh, "I bought you some painkillers, the doctor wants you to wear a bandage. I explained how you couldn't walk to come but he said you should be fine."
"Cool. Why didn't you wake me up?"
"That was the most amount of sleep you've had in ages, I didn't want to disturb you." He took all the rubbish from me and put it to one side.
'Ring,' Ring.' Yasmin slowly pulled heself up to answer it.
"Hello?" Yasmin asked politely. "It's for you, Lexi." She gave me the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hi sweetie, we saw your dad's new big case on the TV and thought we'd call you to tell him congratulations. So how are you?" Mum said cheerfully.
"Um... not to good. I have a swollen ankle."
"How did that happen?"
"Oh, I slipped on the snow" I didn't tell her the full story, "mum, Austin and I are busy packing up the stuff so Yasmin and dad can move before Christmas and so Austin and I can move in. I'll have to call you later..."
"Oh, you can't, we're about to go sight-seeing. Talk to you when we can. Love you." Mum was breaking up.
"Okay, mum I love you too, bye." I hung up.
