(Max's POV)

I woke up the next morning to my mother shaking me awake. I groaned and looked at the clock, 7:00 am. I rolled over and covered my head with the blanket. School doesn't start for another hour. "Maxine, time to get up," she said softly. I rolled my eyes. "Don't call me that!" I snapped.

(Time skip)

I walked through the halls of Hawkins Middle School. I was trailing behind a man who was showing me where my first class here was. All of a sudden, I got this weird kind of deja vu. I remember something happening like this before, through a hallway that is pure white, walking behind a man who I just can't remember the name of.

One thing was for sure, some old, haunting memory was trying to resurface, but I wasn't going to let it bother me.  I walked into the classroom to find a smiling teacher, and a bunch of staring, probably judgmental kids.

I tried to escape to an empty seat in the back of the room, but the teacher, Mr. Clarke, made me stand in front of the class while he made a big deal out of introducing me.

It pissed me off more than almost anything when people called my Maxine. And that is exactly what Mr Clarke did. I felt the shock in my fingertips that happened whenever I was about to use one of my powers. I clenched my fists to stop myself.

"It's Max," I corrected, "Nobody calls me Maxine, it's Max." And with that, I went to the back of the room and sat down in the empty seat.

At recess I sat on the stairs at the back of the gym alone. I didn't mind the loneliness much because it was better than spending a year and a half traveling across the country on foot to escape a psycho scientist who tried to kill me. I started practicing my skateboarding tricks because I had nothing better to do. That's when I saw them. A group of boys spying on me through a fence.

(Time Skip)

I left school early that day, just shortly after math class started. I looked out the window of Billy's car. Forest, forest and more forest, I thought. Soon enough, we arrived at this huge, military looking building in the middle of the woods.

The car stopped at the gate, "Who are you and why are you here?" the gatekeeper asked. "We're here for Mayfield," Billy said. The gates opened and we drove in. My heart stopped. I remembered this place. The lab.

Once we were inside, a guard grabbed me by the wrist and led me through the halls, "wait here," he said, pointing to an empty seat by one of the many doors of this twisted hell. It was only when I sat down, that I noticed the boy in the seat next to me. Oh for fucks sake, you've got to be kidding me.

I recognized this boy. He was one of the stalkers from school. I stared off into space trying not to think about it when I heard a voice from the seat next to me. Shit! I turned around to find that the boy found the situation just as awkward as I did. "Your Max right..." he said, trying to break the awkward silence, "I'm Will."

"Don't worry," he said, obviously noticing the petrified look on my face that I tried so hard to control. "I won't tell anyone," he said. "Thanks," I said, smiling sheepishly.

The door opened suddenly, making us jump. A worried looking woman who was probably Will's mom walked out with a cop trailing behind her.

A cop. Of all the people to see me here, it was a cop.  Well, so much for being secretive.
