chapter four: training

i was at the lab again. this time, i was told to take off my disguise, and change into a skintight bodysuit that was designed to be flexible and streamlined. it conducted electricity, letting it pass through, without the fabric getting destroyed. it even had a hole for my tail which was good. 

i was lead to a large room with a bunch of obstacles and things to climb. there were robots that were designed to attack me that were pacing in their spots. Dr. Owens explained that my goal was to complete the obstacle course, and use my electricity to defuse the robots. simple. then he gave me a collar that measured and tracked my voltage, heartrate, and speed. the collar was black in color, with a monitor on the side, and it clasped in the back.

Owens went out of the room, and soon appeared behind the glass window. "before we start, is it ok if one of our other anomalies watches?" his voice came through a loudspeaker somewhere in the room. i asked who it was, realizing that the collar was also a mic. "his name is Will Byers. i saw you two talking in the hall last week. he hasn't seen your true appearance yet so he won't recognize you." he responded. i agreed and saw will soon appear in the window, gaping at me. 

the course started, platforms started to move, things started spinning, and the robots began scanning the area. i activated my electricity, just like i had practiced over the past week. my eyes glowed, lightning started surrounding me, crackling and flickering. my hair levitated slightly. i activated my claws and ran for the first jump, leaping through the air. i twisted in midair and landed briefly on the first platform, springing to the wall jump. from there, i pounced, as a robot noticed me. through the air, i twisted and flipped, dodging the rubber projectiles with my catlike reflexes. i landed on the robot, acting like a living stun gun as it defused. i continued through the course, at speeds i didn't even know i was capable of. 

as i jumped, i realized that i was reaching new limits, harnessing my talents and power to preform techniques that felt like they came straight out of an anime. i landed at the end of the course, and slammed the off switch, marking my time at two and a half minutes. 

"HOLY SHIT!!" i heard will shout over the loudspeaker. i looked up at the glass window, to see will and Owens beaming at me. "2.3 million volts!" Owens said excitedly. i exited the hall to be met with an excited will byers "that was amazing! how did you do that! who are you!" he asked rapidly, forgetting about his usual shyness. i hesitated and glanced at dr owens. he nodded, granting my request to tell him the truth. "i'm Max" i said simply. "max? as in the new girl?" i nodded. "i wear a wig and colored contacts to hide my appearance. i understand if its freaky." freaky?! its incredible!" he interrupted. "please don't tell anyone" i pleaded. "i wont" he said honestly, calming down. 

"Max?" dr. owens interrupted. "yeah?" i turn to face him. "come with me. i want to show you something"

he led me to a room labeled with my number. inside, were a bunch of files, and a small box. "its time you know the truth about where you come from" i tilted my head in confusion. "you come from a long line of catlike anomalies" he continued to explain, "from what i've read, you have your mother's features, and your father's eyes. when your family was discovered, your parents died to protect you. they called you Avi. after they died you had only one possession that you refused to part with" he held up a necklace with blue, grey, and greed tinted stone beads, and a small wooden charm with a lotus flower carved into it. "this necklace was extremely special to you. does it spark any memories?" i nodded, remembering my family. i smiled as the cool stone beads slipped around my neck, and the wooded charm hung around my collarbone. "thank you" i said.

when i got back to the main room, will was waiting with his mother and a cop. i froze. "max!" will called. i smiled and waved awkwardly. will came over to me, signaling for the cop and his mother to follow. "can i tell them?" he asked me. "if you trust them with your life then yes" i said hesitantly. he nodded. "this is max mayfeild! she goes to my school. she usually wears a disguise so she doesn't get figured out. she has electricity powers, and she got up to 2.3 million volts!" he ranted. the cop, who's name was hopper, held his hand out for me to shake. i took his hand awkwardly, as he squeezed it lightly and gave my hand a firm shake. joyce did the same. 

i heard billy honk his car horn outside. "i have to go now. bye!" i ran into the bathroom to put on my disguise, and ran to billy's car. 

a/n: two chapters in one day! consider it an apology for not posting for so long. im aware that some of you might not like my cat-max thing, but its my fanfic and idfc. if you do like it, then thank you so much!! this story is getting a lot more attention than i though it would, and i thank you guys for that! bye!
