The one with the kid

'Umm. Hi ?' Aaron greeted the little boy.

He turned his head. To reveal a face Aaron has seen before.

The boy's light midnight eyes lit up the room the second he saw Aaron. 'Hello Mr .' He greeted in a high pitched voice.

'Umm. What are you doing here ?' Aaron asked. Unsure whether to report about a little boy watching a surgery. All by himself.

'I'm watching my Aunt Katelyn .' The boy turned back to the screen. Aaron noticed that the little boy dressed in a long sleeved navy blue tee shirt with grey jeans stood on a stool in order to look at the surgery down below.

'She's performing a lung transplant .' The boy informed.

'Umm. Where's your parents ?' Aaron asked.

'My mommy is talking to Aunt Lucy. So Aunt Katelyn let me watch her work .' As the boy answered , he never took his eyes off the scene down below.

'What's your name ?' Aaron asked as he stood aside the little boy.

'Alexander. But everyone calls me Alex .' He looked at Aaron. With the same look of curiosity on his face.

'What's your name ?' He asked.

'I'm Aaron. Nice to meet you Alex .' Aaron replied.

'Huh .' Alex tilted his head to the side. Studying the man infront of him.

'What ?' Aaron asked.

'I think I've seen you before. But I'm not sure where .' As Alex studied the man , his lips pursed to the side as his eyes squinted slightly.

'Umm ?' Aaron questioned. This was the first time he had seen this kid. But he seemed familiar.

'Do you know Aunt Katelyn ?' The little boy asked.

'Yeah. I know Katelyn .' Aaron looked down as the blue haired intern slowly and carefully stitched.

'How old are you ?' Aaron asked.

'I'm 6 years old .' He answered.

'Shouldn't you be in school now ?' Aaron asked.

'School just finished. And Uncle Jeffory fetched me here. Mommy said we were going to have lunch together but she's very busy .' Alex stated.

The way this boy spoke , it was familiar to Aaron. 'How do you know what a lung transplant is ?'

'Aunt Katelyn told me. This patient has unhealthy lungs. So more healthy ones are put into the patient and Aunt Katelyn takes out the bad ones .' Alex spoke with this sense of wonder and excitement in his tone.

'Do you want to be a doctor when you grow up ?' Aaron asked. The boy nodded enthusiastically.

Alex smiled widely. 'Yeah. I want to be a surgeon just like my mommy .'

'What kind of doctor are you ? Mr Aaron ?' The boy asked.

'Oh. I'm a neurosurgeon. So I perform surgery on people's brains .' Aaron saw how Alex's eye's lit up with fascination.

'Really ? That's really cool !' The little boy couldn't hide his excitement. 'What's in a brain ? Do you see the dream box ? Do you see the frontal cortex ?'

'How do you know about those ?' Aaron asked.

'My mommy taught me. Well. And Aunt Katelyn too. Mommy told me that a part of our brain is used for dreams. That's where all our dreams and nightmares form. So that's called the dream box. And there's another part that helps us make the right decision. Mommy say that's the frontal cortex .' Alex had this passion and genuine interest on the topic.

'Yeah. You know. You will be an excellent neurosurgeon when you grow up .' Aaron smiled.

'You think so ?' Alex looked delighted. 'All my friends laugh at me when I tell them I want to be a doctor. They think it's just blood and guts. But I like the science behind it .'

'Well. Surgeons and doctors are two of the most coolest jobs you know ?' Aaron stated.

'Yeah.' Alex laughed. 'They're super cool. Like my mommy .'

'You talk a lot about your mom. How about your dad ?' Aaron asked.

'Umm. I don't know. Mommy said daddy left when I was a baby. But she said if she saw him again , she would want me to meet him. I'm sure my daddy is cool like my mommy .' Alex smiled.

'Oh. I'm sorry .' Aaron felt insensitive for asking the little boy that.

'No. It's okay.' Alex waved the comment over. 'My mommy said that my daddy was the best person she knew. She said that he loved her no matter what. And she told me never to think bad about my daddy.'

'Your mommy must be a very amazing woman huh ?' Aaron smiled. The way he talked about his mother like she was his hero. She was the star in his life.

'Yup. That's what all my uncle and aunts tell me. And they say that's why I'm good. Because of my mommy .' He has this admiration in his eyes. Aaron felt that if he had asked this little boy to tell him about his mother , he would go on for hours upon hours.

'Is there a little munchkin in here ?' A familiar voice entered their conversation.

The two looked behind at the door. Aaron was shocked to see who was standing there.

'Mommy !' Alex rushed off the seat and immediately tackled his mother in a bear hug.

'Hi buddy. How was school ?' Aphmau smiled as she peppered his face in kisses.

'It was good.' He turned behind to Aaron. 'This is my new friend. Mr Aaron .' Alex introduced.

'Oh.' Aphmau looked at Aaron blankly for a few seconds. When she realised she was silent , she put on her sweet smile and greeted him. 'Hey Aaron .'

'Hey Aph. I didn't know you have a kid .' Aaron put his hands in the pocket of his coat nervously. I mean. They were ex-lovers. So you could feel this awkward tension between the two.

'Yeah.' Aphmau stood up.

'Mommy. How did you know I was here ?' Alex asked.

'Aunt Katelyn told me .' Aphmau smiled.

'Really ? Poop .' He scrunched his face. Aaron felt himself chuckle slightly at the little boy's face.

'Hey. You can watch Uncle Garroth's surgery later. I'll have Aunt Ivy come watch you okay ? How does that sound ?' Aphmau suggested.

'Yeah .' Alex smiled. 'Thank you mommy .'

'Come on superman. You must be starving huh ?'

'Yeah. It's Foodtruck Thursday today. Can we please get a food-truck ? Please mommy ?' Alex pouted his bottom lip.

'Okay Baby.' Aphmau laughed. 'We can go get a food-truck. Come on .' She held his hand in hers.

'Bye Mr Aaron .' Alex waved goodbye to his new friend.

'Bye Alex. Bye Aphmau .' Aaron smiled.

'Bye Aaron .' Aphmau left with her son.
