Epilogue
You wouldn’t think that everything that happened seven years ago was so simple compared to life now. So much has happened that has dramatically changed my life, however I wouldn’t change it for the world. It made me grow up and take control of my life and also made me realise that how I felt didn’t matter anymore, there were others I had to put before myself, especially my little boy Aiden.
Aiden is five, I had him when I was twenty and he has changed my life. I always thought beforehand that my life came before everyone else’s that my emotions mattered the most. But really, I was a selfish teenage girl and I’m not afraid to admit it. Having Aiden has brought the best out of me and made me become a better person.
We still live in America; however we were currently in a car, in England, on our way to see my mother and little sister Jasmine. I haven’t seen them in less than a year and Aiden and I thought it would be a great idea to come to England and surprise them with a visit. He loves his grandma and auntie, especially because Jasmine is young enough to still play with him.
“Mummy, I can’t wait to see Jasmine and Grandma!” he chirped, as he was staring out the window at everything we past.
“I know sweetie, you’ve told me several times.” I chuckled lightly. I loved my little boy, how could he be so cute and be mine? He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me!
He carried on gazing out the window until we reached my mums house. As soon as the car stopped, Aiden undid his seatbelt and got out the car, running to the door and rang the bell several times. I’m sure my mum won’t be happy about that!
I reached him at the door, just in time for it to open and let me see my surprised mother. I laughed, “It worked Aiden, we shocked her!” he laughed with me and clapped his hands, jumping about.
“Oh my, I wasn’t expecting you at all. Come in, come in!” she said ushering us into the house I grew up in. It hasn’t changed a bit since I moved out seven years ago to live in America.
We came into the house and I felt like I was at home, it had such a comfortable atmosphere. I can’t believe I haven’t been ‘home, home’ all this years. We’ve seen each other in America, other countries like Spain, and we’ve seen each other in England but we’ve never been home for some reason. I don’t think I’ve ever had the courage. I think the only reason I made it here was because Aiden begged the hell out of me to come and surprise mum and Jasmine at their home. I gave in because I knew he had a right to visit the place where his grandma lives and where I grew up most of my life.
When we were in, Aiden immediately started running around the house, calling out Jasmine’s name. He always has so much energy, it’s unbelievable. Once Aiden found Jasmine, they went off and played as me and mum sat down and began talking.
“How have you been?” mum asked.
I smiled, “Yeah it’s been great, Aiden absolutely loved his first day at kindergarten and he adored his birthday presents you got him, thank you so much!”
“Oh that’s great, I hope you took pictures of his cute little face. He has this amazing smile that lights up on his face when he’s happy. I really want to see it again.”
“Yes of course, I couldn’t say no to an opportunity to take a picture of him!” I laughed. “How are you holding up?” I asked lightly, knowing that the subject I’m implying about is still quite tender. Nine months ago Sam, my mum’s husband, was killed in a car accident and it was devastating news, mum wouldn’t stop crying for weeks, she would literally burst into tears whenever she thought about him. Hopefully she doesn’t feel so bad now. It was heart-breaking because Sam was such a nice man and I was happy to call him my step-dad.
