Kat POV
"Katherine! What did I tell you about sitting there?" She laughed at the sight of me sitting on the floor of the sandbox. "There are ants honey. Someone left their food here, calling some little ants. It's the ants turn to play in the sandbox."
"But I want to play now, mommy!" I whined, trying to make a sandcastle."Honey, if you take turns, the ants will be nice to you. But, if you don't, they will hurt you." Her soft eyes begging me to step out of the sand box. She stretched her hand out for me to take it. "Let's be nice to the ants."
"No! I hate ants! They're ruining my fun! " I screamed stubbornly, continuing my failed attempt of a sandcaslte.Just then, I felt a stab of pain shoot through my thigh, another on my bottom , and one on my arm. I looked down on my small body to see ants running all over my skin. The pain they caused was too much for my small body. I started crying and calling for my mother.
She bent down and lifted me into her arms. She cradled me, telling me everything would be okay. She told me to cry until I noticed the pain wasn't as painful as I thought. And she was right. I was so caught up crying, I hadn't noticed she already wiped all the ants off my body and was currently doing the same to the tears on my face. Eventually, I realised the pain was barely even a sting. It was practically gone.
I looked up at my mother, who was smiling down at me.
"See?" She said, showing me her pearly white teeth. "A few bites aren't really that painful."
Bites, huh?
"What?" He practically choked out, waking my up from my daydream.
"I said," I took a breath. "Are you a vampire?"
His eyes gave him away.
Suddenly, it all made sense. Running into this house at random in a murderous storm, them finding me alive and letting me to stay with them under no parental supervision, and the blood dripping from his mouth. He was a vampire. Finding this house wasn't an accident, and they were planning to devour my very blood. I wasn't safe. I needed to get out of there.
I started to backing away and moving slowly towards the stairs. I needed to get my things and leave.
Seriously, when exactly did my life become so hectic. There was once a time when I was 'normal. The days of my mother and I together, like a real family, even though I should cherish them, taunted me and are part of this living nightmare. I miss the hours of sleep I used to have. There used to be a second when I would laugh. There was once a moment when I would just smile.
Smile, huh? Haven't done that in a while.
"Where are you going?" His words brought me back to reality. Reality including a vampire. Does that count as reality?
"I have to use the bathroom." I blurted out, just a bit too quickly. It seemed like the best excuse at the moment and I kind of did, because he scaring the pee out of me.
"The bathroom?" He looked at me with suspicion glinting in his eyes.
"Yes, I have to pee." I said nervously, twirling my brown hair in my fingers.
"There's a bathroom downstairs." He said, not hiding his suspicion.
"I've been trained to only use toilets that are upstairs. They flow better. It's a gravitational thing." I shrugged as if it was the most obvious thing, knowing full well it was pure nonsense.
