In the year of 1940, India was still raged in the fire of defeating the British lords. It was on 30th July 1940, Somnath Roy Choudhury had his first child, his son. He named him Shankar Roy Choudhury and he was his only child as during the delivery due to some complications he lost his wife.
In those days of Kolkata, that was hypothetically called the city of wealth, many landlords wanted their sons to attain higher education in abroad.
So just like any wealthy doting parent, Somnath also sent his son abroad to study law. Shankar was a very good child and became a fine man with high etiquette and class in London.
When he returned India, he was already admired by many. As he was the best of best. Just the right height, physique, looks, brain and manners.
As Shankar was growing he also thought of the ideal woman he wants to marry. A woman of high class, literate enough, whose spine is straight and has got the right attitude with her flawless face. Just like any egoistic but British man will ever think.
His days in India were well enough until two visitors came to visit.
Somnath welcomed the visitors wholeheartedly saying,"Oh oh Burman welcome! Welcome!"
They hugged each other as if showing deep friendship. Shankar also greeted him with a namaskar.
Somnath said,"Babu meet him, he is my childhood friend Radheshyam Burman or rather I should say my best friend Burman. We owe him a lot... and this pretty girl beside him is his daughter Baishakhi."
Shankar nodded and smiled at her. She was indeed a beauty but doesn't look smart enough. Her spine wasn't straight and she had a timid character as if lacking confidence. Shankar thought all these to himself.
After taking seats... Somnath continued,"And today he is here to connect the frienship into family relation... you are getting married to Baishakhi."
Shankar's jaw fell... cuz Baishakhi wasn't at all like his ideal woman and the first thing was she hadn't reached womanhood yet. She was hardly 18... how can he marry a 6 years younger girl. Out of all these tensed thoughts he spoke out,"Are you all serious?!"
The happy joyous mood ruined in a sec. Somnath could sense the danger and took him to the other room. He said,"What are you doing?! How can you react like that infront of them!"
"First you say baba... is it... is it true that that child is getting married to me?!"
"Child you say? She's already 18... a fine docile woman, she can do household works... and what do you want more?"
"But she doesn't have any etiquette!!"
"That's enough! I'll pass away in few years... before that can't you feel this little wish of mine...? I request you..."
Seeing tears in his father's eyes he hesitantly agreed. Finally the father and son came out and the rest of the discussion went smoothly.
After the guests took there departure, he looked at his father's eyes and said,"Baba... I agreed to this marriage only for you but remember... I am forced to..."
To be continued...
