As days were passing the marriage date of Shankar was coming forward. He really don't wanted to marry her. By her attitude that day, he could clearly say that she was a very rural and dumb kinda girl.
Then an idea stroke his mind. He thought of writing a letter to her stating his reasons and requesting her to cancel the marriage.
He wrote a full letter and by his sources posted it directly to her. He was quite satisfied that a fragile and idiot like her would be completely heartbroken and call off the marriage.
But days were passing as usually there wasn't any reply from her end. He got anxious and thought to himself,"Is she too much stubborn or really want her life to be destroyed in such a forceful marriage?... or... is it that she can't read..?"
His head started spinning and he completely didn't know what to do.
In tension and hope for the reply, it was finally their day of marriage. He was completely emotionless that day. With lots of happiness everywhere he was feeling so much spaced out.
The young man in his 20s, who had completed his education in abroad was going to marry a small girl who has no traits of a lady.
Finally their marriage ceremony was completed. As per bengali rituals, the bride and bridegroom cannot meet each other till the day of phoolshojja or basar raat... the day they can finally be one.
Shankar was eagerly waiting for that night... not for expressing his love but to get his answer of why she didn't reply to his letters.
Finally it was that night... Shankar's room was decorated with fragrant flowers and dim lights. Just a perfect scenario to be romantic. But unfortunately he wasn't.
He went straight into the room and stood infront of Baishakhi. He looked at her and asked,"Why wasn't there any reply? Can't you read?! Are you really that illiterate?!"
"Excuse me! Mind your language please... and yes I read it..."
"You read it?! And knowing everything you took this step?! Are you crazy?!"
"ARE YOU CRAZY?! This is not abroad this is India... where a girl's reputation matters if I'd have cancelled the wedding... have you ever thought what the society would think of us?! You are just selfish!"
Shankar was speechless... yea it was true he just thought bout himself... then he again spoke,"I can never love you..."
"Have you given me any chance?... we never know the future..."
"But what if I could never ever love you... what will you do then?"
"Then leave me... send me back to my home..."
"Then you'll not think bout your reputation?"
"No, cuz that will be my failure of not getting my husband's love..."
Shankar was quite amused of her sharp answering skills... and before he could realise Baishakhi has already taken a step towards his type of ideal woman...
To be continued...
