Months had passed, people thought she had lost her mind, but Stevie didn't care. She had busied herself with wedding preparations.
The moment she had come back home, she had moved in with Kim. A week ago they had finally been able to take Matthew home with them. And now she was set to wed. Everything was going as it was supposed to. She was wearing her wedding dress already. Her hair was made, her makeup done. The guest were down in the garden of her house, just waiting for her to come downstairs.
Somewhere in the back of her mind Stevie knew that this was insane. She couldn't really think that marrying Kim was the right thing to do. But as always, the more people told her she had gone mental, the more she became dead set on proofing them wrong.
And right now she was alone in her bedroom. She had already sent everyone out, saying she needed a moment to herself. That much was right, and she didn't care right now if they knew exactly why she needed to be alone. But as she looked down at the white line on the mirror, Stevie didn't care.
The burning feeling washed away all the doubts she might have had. Actually it made her think that she was doing the right thing. It made her ignore that ever since Robin had died her cocaine habit had gotten even more out of hands. And it made her forget. It made her forget that she didn't love Kim, but someone else. She was able to pretend she was happy and looking forward to being married to him.
The sudden knock on the door startled her.
"I told you I needed a moment." She called out, thinking it was either her mother, or Lori, or Sharon.
The door opened nevertheless. And when she looked up into the mirror of her vanity, she felt as if everything was falling apart. Standing in the doorway was Lindsey, and all he did was looking at her, shaking his head.
"What are you doing here?"
Stevie stood, needing to somehow get the upper hand in this.
"Telling you that you are making a mistake." He told her.
The tone of his voice was taking her by surprise. Ever since way before their breakup she hadn't heard him telling her something like this with no judgment in his voice.
"So would everyone else if they were here now." She shrugged her shoulders.
"But I still owe you an answer." Lindsey continued. "Unless everyone else."
"What?"
Stevie stood, totally perplexed, in her room. She had no idea what he was talking about. And she wasn't too sure if she wanted to know right now. Not when she guessed that she was already making everybody wait.
"Lindsey, I'm glad you came." She tried to regain control. "But I don't really have time to chat right now. I need to go downstairs."
"It won't take long."
He stepped closer to her, taking a few seconds to look at her. He saw the deep breath she took, the slight rolling of her eyes.
"Okay. Whatever..." Stevie replied, dismissively.
"You remember what you asked me, after I wanted to know if you wished to die?" He asked, making another step to her, and then reached for her hands. "You asked what you still had in your life. And I didn't reply."
"Honestly, I have to go..."
"Just one minute." Lindsey asked from her. "If you still want to go downstairs, make the most likely biggest mistake of your life and marry Kim after that, I'll let you do so. But please, Stevie, I beg you to wait just one minute."
She stared at him with wide eyes. And for once in the last months it wasn't because of the coke. Never before she had heard Lindsey beg. Still in kind of a shock about this, Stevie just nodded her head.
"You will always have me."
"I don't." She shook her head, somewhat sad that it wasn't true. "I lost you. Carol Ann has you now."
"I told her to move out weeks ago." He shook his head, smiling at her. "And she left."
"Why are you telling me this now?" Stevie asked, the tears once more falling.
"Because I know that you don't love him." He explained. "And I won't let you make a mistake I know you will regret."
"Why, Lindsey? Please tell me why!"
"Cause I still love you."
He had thought about many reaction. Actually he had thought she would scream, fight and tell him to fuck off. What he hadn't thought was suddenly having her arms around his neck, her body crashing against his as she kissed him, turning him slightly and pushing him down on her bed.
I hope you will forgive me this short moment of shock at the end of the last part. ;) But I just couldn't help myself. Hope you're still all with me and enjoy reading this little story as much as I enjoy writing it.
Love, Dani
