"You won't believe how glad I am to finally be home again."
Her words caused Lindsey only to shake his head. Never would he have thought that her priorities would change so dramatically. But they had. Within not even six years Stevie had changed so much that sometimes he had to remind himself that this really was the woman he had been with already fifteen years ago. That she was the woman who had, after breaking up with him, fallen so deeply for men, parties, and drugs that he hadn't known her anymore.
Now Stevie was a wife and mother, first and foremost. They had rushed their wedding when she had told him she was pregnant with Isabella. At first she had wanted to wait until after their daughter had been born. But after thinking about it for a couple of days, they had decided to rush. They had, for once, wanted to go a more traditional way. And after they had been having their second child, Stevie had decided to take a couple of years off. Ava was five months old now, but still Lindsey wondered how on earth Stevie had come up with that name.
"Are you even listening to what I say?"
Stevie stood in front of him, hands in hips and glaring. But one look into her eyes and he knew that she wasn't meaning the stern expression.
"I'm sorry."
"Mhmm." She was still glaring.
"What did you say?"
Lindsey asked, trying to do some damage control.
"I asked if you really were okay with my decision to put a stop on touring for a few years."
She bit her lip, now nervous. It had been something else while they still had been on tour, and she had been utterly exhausted with a new born and a toddler to care about. Now that they were home and she had no idea how everything would continue she was slowly having doubts. Not about her decision, but about how Lindsey and she would go on.
They always had their life centered around their music. There always had been something to do. A tour to go on, songs to record. They always had been working. And now that she had put a stop on it herself, she had no idea what would follow.
"Why shouldn't I?"
He didn't know why she was so nervous now.
"I don't know."
"What's going on with you?"
By now Lindsey knew that something was not quite right with her.
"I just... Lindsey, we've always had something to do. Recording, touring, whatever... Right now there are so many crazy things in my mind about how we can totally fuck everything up. You know when we don't have anything to do."
Stevie would have thought about quite some reactions, but not that he was beginning to laugh.
"What's so funny now?"
"You do remember when we fucked our relationship up?" He reminded her. "We didn't split when we hadn't been doing anything, but when we've been working together. And we had some massive arguments while recording Tango. Not when I've been working solo, not when you've been working solo. But when we were working together."
"I'm still afraid of what will happen when we're just hanging around this house for the next couple of years."
"Come here."
Stevie did, closing the distance between them, she brought her arms around his neck, while his went around her waist. Lindsey just held her close for a moment, feeling as she was slowly relaxing again. Her face rested against his chest, and what he couldn't see was that as soon as his hands began to gently massage the small of her back, she closed her eyes. But he felt her smile after he had placed a lingering kiss on her hair.
"I love you."
She was muttering quietly, still smiling. And then she looked up.
"I love you, too. And Stevie, we won't kill each other."
It made her laugh, and shaking her head. There was something about Lindsey that always had made her feel at ease, always made her believe that things would work out, even when they had been at their worst. Leaning up for a kiss, Stevie decided that he was right. They had made things work after their break up. They were married, had two completely adorable daughter. But he had reminded her about the most important thing. They loved each other.
