Stumbling out of the tree line and back into the concrete jungle, you pause at the odd emptiness of the Florida streets. It was hardly sundown, yet the sidewalks and streets were barren. Not even the sound of cicadas filled the space, it was dead quiet. You adjust your backpack, pushing the anxiety that started to bubble towards the back of your mind and began your trek home.
Crossing over an abandoned street, the street lamps turned on to illuminate the now dimming walkway. For five minutes you walked in eerie silence, until the ruffling of feathers and a small chirp signaled the arrival of your favorite friend.
"(Y/n)! (Y/n)!" You hear BB chirp frantically as he flutters down onto your shoulder.
"Hello my dearest friend," you murmur, holding out a finger for the little blue jay to hop on. "What's the matter, you missed me?"
"Danger! You're being followed!!"
Before you can say anything BB flies behind you and lands on a telephone pole. You whip your heard back and look at him, still chirping frantically while pointing his beak towards a nearby corner store. You squint, letting out a silent gasp when you catch the sight of a shadow disappear behind the old brick building.
BB flies off into the sky and you turn around, quickening your pace. Every so often you'd turn around, catching a glimpse of the shadow moving behind some sort of building or tree. Gritting you're teeth you're break into a light jog. You were only a few streets away from your house now, you'd be there in no time. Just stay calm. Stay calm.
Suddenly all the street lights turn off, leaving you in darkness. The sound of foot steps approaching rapidly echoes through the empty streets, your heart rate quickens before turning around to face your attacker who was now barreling towards you.
"Get AWAY!" You yell, summoning Vera by your side. With incredible speed Vera creates a thick vine, sprouting near the assailant before it whips into their gut with enough force that it knocked them back a few good yards. Not wasting any time, you turn back around and sprint the rest of the way home, anxiety and adrenaline fueling you down the last two streets and up the stairway that leads to you and your Aunts little home.
Ripping the door open you dash inside, slamming it shut before locking the deadbolt. You paint, hanging your head and silently thanking BB, wherever the hell that little blue ball was.
"(Y/N!) What on this good Earth are you doing slamming doors like that!" Your Aunt scolds from the couch.
"S-sorry Amra, I..." you pause, catching your breath you meet her now concerned gaze. "I thought someone was following me.."
Your aunt says nothing, but gets up to peek out the window. You follow close behind, popping your head over her shoulder as she moves the blinds to reveal a few cars drive down the road, and a group of young adults chatting as the walk up the sidewalk now illuminated by street lamps.
Strange...it was dead silent moments ago.
"Anyone would be a fool to stalk a young (woman/man) while there are people about," she sighs, removing her hand before turning around and meeting your confused and worried gaze. "Are you sure you were being followed?"
You nodded. "Positive."
"At least your home safe now" she huffs. I made stir fry for dinner, get yourself something to eat and try to get some rest, okay sweet bean?"
You offer a weak smile and another nod, taking off your shoes and dropping your book bag by the front door before disappearing into the kitchen. You pull out a plate and a few utensils as you hear Amra return to the couch, flipping through channels before settling on the local news station. Filling your plate with delicious sir fry, you listen in on the anchorman reporting the latest story.
"Police are investigating another fire, this time at a Ft. Lauderdale 7-11 gas station earlier today. This is the 8th fire along the eastern Florida coast, police have reason to believe all fires are the work of a single arsonist. Local authorities currently do not have any suspects, but are working diligently—"
The grip on your plate tightens, anxiety once again creeping up from the back of your mind.  It was starting to sound like everything Jotaro said may be right. Quickly you shuffle out of the kitchen and into your dim bedroom, making sure you don't slam the door. No longer hungry you place your plate on your desk before crawling into bed.
Turning towards your nightstand, a picture frame with an old photo of your parents stares back at you. You grab it and roll onto your back, staring blankly as thoughts begin to swirl in your head.
Why did it have to be fire?
It was silly to be so unnerved by a flame, you knew that, but it was something that could not be helped considering your past experiences. Something about this 'arsonist' didn't sit right with you. From the short convo you had with Jotaro to your short dream after, it left an odd taste in your mouth. The dream never changed, but it did after your small talk. That had to mean something, right?
Running your fingers absentmindedly across the dusty glass, a new thought pops into your head.
'Could it be related?'
No. There was no way it was related, and you wouldn't dare to entertain the thought any longer.
With a shakey sigh you put the photo back and shimmy your way under the covers. Today was to confusing, too exhausting. It was time to close your eyes and stop thinking.
You curl your body into itself and pull the covers up over your head. As the sounds of cicadas lull you off into dreamland, outside your window a single street lamp flickers.
