At the moment, everything was excruciatingly silent.
It was uncomfortable and stretching.
Though I didn't mind it; I needed Charlie to say something even if I was pretending to be disinterested the moment I stepped in his house. What more could I do than to act nonchalant. I couldn't run away. I couldn't die. And I couldn't deal with the problem. So I just acted and chose to sit on the porch while Oliver and Charlie sat behind me on the couch, leaving them to discuss about what happened last night.
Charlie hadn't uttered a word for whole three minutes after Oliver stopped speaking. He seemed to be fine with it or he expected it. Whatever it was he remained patient, so I couldn't help but to look over my shoulder. Charlie's eyes were set at Oliver but they were somewhere far away as if he was contemplating something.
"Charlie?" Oliver finally called out to him.
Charlie's blue gaze finally returned from his long brooding as he spoke with a deep sigh. "I don't think it's Erebus."
I couldn't help the jitters sent through my body at his name.
"I think so too." Oliver agreed. "It wasn't as strong as I had felt in his presence."
Charlie nodded as he spoke, "Just an angle I'm looking through but if you're right about that to be a demon then it has something to do with him being trapped in perdition."
I could feel the ice seeping in my veins at the possibility while something terrifying was recalled to me from last night.
Charlie had always concluded Erebus for my nightmares. Even I did at times. But I started looking at it like a giant wolf, tethered to a post, locked in a cage, baring its teeth at me. I would be scared initially but with time I would learn to walk past the wolf without a fear. Maybe I had put too much of faith on the leash and the cage that kept wolf restrained.
"He's coming," I spoke as the words from that demon rang in my ears. I turned sideways to look at them. They were both staring at my words with eyes pealing in alarm. "You can't hide... Not for long...He's furious...Seething with rage. That demon said to me"
"Can he be freed?" Oliver asked. I could sense hardness in his words as his hazels flitted to Charlie.
Charlie inhaled a deep breath. He seemed exasperated. "There's possibility for everything. No matter how slightest it is. It exists."
I felt the weight of his words making my shoulders sag.
"So do you think he's out there now?" I tried to keep my voice neutral without any wavers but it wasn't quite an effort I put.
Charlie seemed worried but his gaze softened. "I don't think it's that easy to break free from where he is."
I couldn't feel any kind of ease at his words. What if it wasn't easy, it wasn't impossible either.
Maybe Erebus was invincible and from the beginning we were just trying in vain. We were able to buy some time but the inevitable would happen.
I wondered if Reuben could have saved me again?
I closed my eyes as I leant my head back. My mind was tangled amidst the fright of the possibilities that could be yet I couldn't help but to let my heart wander off to Reuben.
I suspired a long breath as I opened my eyes. I looked in the direction of Oliver. His eyes were trained at me. His jaw was clenched. And I immediately was aware of what he felt at the moment. He knew I was the pivot of Erebus's obsession. He was flustered at the possibility. But I couldn't miss the rock hard gleam in his intent stare at me. It was perseverance. I knew there would be no length Oliver was not willing to go for my sake. And this scared me.
Oliver turned to Charlie, his brow furrowed, "What should we do next?"
Charlie looked at him with sincerity gleaming his eyes, "We have to go see the Seer"
"Seer of our clan- You mean Alwina Greyford?" Oliver asked, his voice tinged with doubt. "Isn't she unwell? People are saying she's lost her mind."
"Well I am not particularly talking about her." Charlie replied. "I mean her grandson, Jacob Greyford. He is the chosen one, destined to be our clan's next seer."
At the mention of this, I noticed a slight clench in Oliver's jaw and his expressions hardened and another brief silence filled the air.
"What's wrong?" I heard myself asking.
Charlie took in a deep breath as his eyes flitted to me for a second before they again trained at Oliver with a knowing gaze. "I think it's time for a long over-due apology."
***
As we drove further, closing in on our destination, I could see Oliver's grip tightening over steering as he drove through the narrow, winding road. We were going to a group home kind of a place where the young people of same clan hangs out.
I could see it- that name Jacob Greyford bothering him. "Are you okay?" I asked, a tinge of concern ringing in my words.
He looked at me briefly before he trained his eyes back on the road. He gulped nervously. "Yes."
I sighed as I turned my head to look outside the window. "You know I will find out eventually."
There was a small pause before he broke the silence. "You gonna come inside? They know who your biological father was."
"I don't care. We are there on a mission." I said with a hint of disinterest with my eyes fixed on the scenery passing by.
Finally the car rounded a final bend and a house came in the view. Oliver pulled the car to a stop as he turned off the engine. "You don't have to come Aurora." He said even though he knew I would come. He could sense how adamant I was being.
I shook my head. "No, it all started with me so I have to be there.
We both hopped out of the car, squared our shoulder as we eyed the group home before moving towards it.
