What Calls Us

Ake has a brother, though they haven't spoken in years. He lives far over the ocean, too far to warrant making a trip every year, or even once a decade. Ake doesn't like to spend money unnecessarily. He also doesn't like his brother very much.

When they were children, Ake and Olle played together in the mud. When they were teenagers, they felt themselves gradually growing apart but didn't do anything about it. When they were adults, they went to separate colleges and forgot to keep in touch. They still forget. Such is life.

Ake pities himself for this. His wife didn't have problems with her siblings, so she didn't understand his relationship with Olle all that well. "Just talk to him, for God's sake," she would scream, exasperated, whenever Ake would start a sentence with "when Olle and I were little..."

Ake shakes his head as he remembers this. She's not here, he reminds himself. Stop thinking about her. He needs a drink. Stands up, walks over to the kitchen, opens the fridge. There's no beer to be found. He opens the cupboard. No wine or vodka, either.

Ake's head hurts. If he needed a drink before, he needs two or three now. He puts on his coat and heads out the door. The Pit is calling him.

On the other side of town, Noah, too, puts on his jacket. The running track is what calls him.
