"It's going to be okay Mikey. It's going to be okay," I whisper into my brothers ear. But deep inside I knew, that nothing was going to be the same ever again. If only I could've gotten there in time. If only I knew that yesterday was going to be the last good day.
I look down at the knife in my hands. The one I've just pulled out of Mikey's stomach, and throw it across the room. "FUCK!!!" I scream at his limp body, knowing that I could've prevented this. I hear sirens and almost immediately the door to our apartment is kicked down, paramedics following the falling door, stretcher at the ready.
They lift my little brother onto the stretcher and rush him out to the ambulance, closing the doors once I slide in the back. "Gerard Way? Brother to the injured Mikey Way?" a man questions, writing things down on a clipboard as a nod my head, keeping my mouth clamped shut. I can feel the lump in my throat and I know that if I speak, I will collapse in a puddle of tears.
"I need you to tell me what happened Gerard," the man says. So I tell him. Right from the start. "My brother and I were always best friends. I'm 3 years older than him and we've been close since he was born. 2 years ago, I met a guy called Frank Iero. He wanted to start a band, so we did. I brought along Mikey, and Frank brought a bloke called Ray Toro. I was 24 at the time, Mikey was 21, Frank was just 20 and Ray was 24 like me."
I pause for a moment as we all get out of the ambulance and the man takes me to a private room. "Continue" he nods. "Our band is called My Chemical Romance and we're going good. But a year after we formed, Ray and I got really close. We started dating and soon enough we were in a serious relationship. Mikey has always thought Ray was crazy, but I always thought he was just joking around. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago Ray told Mikey to - I quote - 'Watch your back Mikey. You'll get what you deserve.' But I never thought he was being serious. It was Ray who stabbed my baby brother. I don't know why though..."
