As I rode to Maverick's shop Eli's words plauged my mind. It was the day after we had attempted to capture Varic and I couldn't get what that smug bastard had said to me out of my head. I was scarcely paying attention to the rode. If it wasn't for my shadowhunter senses and years of riding experience I'd of crashed.
When I arrived at the shop I found it closed up, which I thought was odd. It was the middle of the morning, there was no reason it should have been closed. Besides, Finn had told me to meet him here. He didn't do that unless he was working.
"Anyone home?" I ventured as I opened the door. The place looked deserted.
"Sydney!" Maverick came out of the office. "Heard you and Finn got yourself into a tricky situation yesterday with the Nephilim."
"We handled it, Varic got out," I told him.
"I know, Finn told me," Maverick explained. "Do I need to be worried about the Nephilim coming after any other downworlders in my city?" His gaze sent shivers down my spine. It would have sent lesser people running with their tail between their legs.
"No," I said, firmly. "They were only interested in Varic because he escaped custody from another Institute."
"Good," the pack alpha said. His demeanor instantly changed. "Well, you all ready to go?
"Go? Go where?" I asked. Finn hadn't mentioned us going anyway. He had just asked me to meet him at the shop at 10.
"Oh right, you weren't at the Moon Meeting. We're meeting Jasper at the border." My blood ran cold. "He's going to accuse us of killing his son and we're going to contest we had nothing to do with it. Should be fun, might turn into a battle." Maverick grinned. "Thought it might strike fear in them a little with a shadowhunter there."
"Sounds...great." I knew I wasn't doing a good job of covering up my feelings but Maverick didn't seem to notice. "Where's Finn?"
"In the bathroom, freshening up," Maverick said. "I'll meet you guys at the border, don't take too long." He morphed into his wolf form before running out of the building. Did I mention there was a doggy door?
I walked over to the bathroom noticing the door was closed. "Finn?" I ventured as I opened the door. He was sitting on the floor with his head in his hands. His shirt was off - he must've been in the middle of changing.
Any other time I'd have gotten flustered at seeing his bare chest but not with the look he had on his face when he lifted his head to look at me. "Sydney, what are we going to do?"
I knelt down next to him, putting my hand on his knee. "Nothing. No one's going to find out anything. There's no proof that we did anything."
"But we killed Dimitri!" He shouted exasperated. I could tell that this had really been eating at him. It had been on my mind as well but with everything going on with Varic and Eli I had pushed it to the depths of my brain.
"No," I told him. "I killed Dimitri. If anyone has to go down for it I will."
"You did it to save my life," Finn seemed inclined to reminded me. There was no way I could have forgotten that fact, however. I still remembered the brutal fight between the two wolves, the fear I had in my heart. "I owe you a life-debt."
I wanted to tell him that he didn't owe me anything. I'd kill Dimitri a hundred more times if that meant that Finn would live. But wolves were stuck in their ways. It wasn't their fault; it was the primal instincts within them.
"We need to get going," I changed the subject. I found Finn's clean shirt on the bathroom counter and handed it to him. "Maverick is going to be questioning where we are." The Alpha was probably already at the border by now.
