Chapter Seven

D is for Delightful Date

“So bowling and pizza?” asked Dean as him and Brooklyn Girl walked out of honours chemistry together.

“Sure so long as you’re agreeing that you want to try it and I’m not forcing you to” replied Tess giving him a smile.

“No of course I’m totally willing to give it a go.”

“I just can’t believe you’ve never tried it before, what have you been doing for fun your life so far?” replied Tess jokily.

“Oh this and that lame stuff basically, so I’ll meet you on the corner of 42nd street?” He asked “And you’re sure you don’t want me to have a car come get you?”

“Dean I’ve been taking the Subway since I was born, I even take it to school so I don’t need a car to come pick me up thank you very much.” Tess replied sounding a tad annoyed.

Dean thought he’d a fended her from her response but he shrugged it off knowing it probably had to do with her adjusting to her new fortunes as a Howard-Williams.

“See you tonight and don’t forget to wear socks!” replied Tess flashing a smile as she turned the hallway, Dean could feel his heart beating fast and a voice inside his head saying I can’t wait.

Dean knew he was totally over Clara because well Tess just made him feel light and at ease, it was a great feeling to be having as he walked into his house after his family butler opened the door.

“Dean is that you?” called Mrs. Tracey from the living room, Dean peered inside to see a whole bottle of whisky on the tiny coffee table and a now empty tumbler in his mother’s hands.

Mrs. Tracey was obliviously in one of her moods again the alcohol her form of escape.

“Hey mom!” said Dean being weary as he entered the room, he knew all too well how the drink made her temperamental.

“Your father says he’s going to be working late again, I suspect he’s laying into some slut!” her voice sounded whiny.

Dean didn’t have anything to say in response, he still wasn’t sure if what his mother was thinking was true or just woman’s paranoia.

“I’ve got a date tonight Mom so I can’t stay home and keep you company.” Dean said looking away from her.

Dean stood at the door hoping his mom wouldn’t ask who he was taking out; it was one thing to say he’d dumped Clara it was another to say he was dating another Howard-Williams, epically considering how Mrs. Tracey thought about them.

Mrs. Tracey before marriage was a Vander-Belt and everyone in New York society knew that meant power, money and above all New York legacy. The Howard-Williams were not legacy their power and fame to New York society had come in the 1930s when a young man came to town with the hope of one day owning America’s largest Hotel chain. The fact that Billy Howard-Williams had worked up from bell boy meant a lot of scandal in the day marrying a beautiful Texas heiress like he did, so hence Mrs. Tracey had major problems with her son’s choice in women.

“So who is she?” she asked probing for information.

“She’s just a girl mom!” replied Dean knowing not only did dating another Howard-Williams bring shame to his mother but one from trashy Brooklyn well that would of been the icing on the cake.

“Do you know much about Jennifer Howard-Williams daughter? The women were highly discussing it at Bridge with the rumour being she’s Mason Charles’s daughter!” said Mrs. Tracey with her most scandalous voice.
