June 21, it was nearing noon and Kageyama was jittery with nerves. The sky was a bright, burning blue. Cicadas chirped loudly. Only a few more days before school started again. It was Hinata's birthday, and Kageyama planned on doing everything he could to do to make it one of the best ever for his boyfriend. He checked and double-checked to make sure that he had packed everything. Volleyball, check. Gift, check. Phone, check. He had everything he needed. With the excitement that could rival Hinata's, he ran to the park to meet with him.
"Hey, Tobio!" Hinata calls. Sun bounced off his orange hair just right. It looked like he was glowing. Kageyama felt his heart skip a beat.
"Shoyo! Happy birthday!" Kageyama exclaims. He pulls the wrapped present out of his bag. "I got you a present!"
"Thank you!" Hinata beamed. "If you don't mind, I think I'll open it right now." He tore through the brightly colored wrapping paper and opened the box. Inside was a shirt with an arrow pointing up at Hinata that said BOKE.
Kageyama smiled. "I had it custom-ordered just for you. If it doesn't fit, I can order another one, though."
"It looks to be about the right size," Hinata replied. He folded the shirt and tucked it into his bag. "Thank you, I'll try it on when I get home."
"Great, I'm glad you liked it!" Kageyama was grinning from ear-to-ear. He didn't have much experience giving gifts, so he was ecstatic that Hinata liked the shirt. He reached into his bag again and pulled out the volleyball. "Wanna practice?"
"Yeah!"
Together he and Hinata practiced nothing in particular. Kageyama noted that Hinata had improved his receiving greatly. He also noticed how his eyes sparkled and hair glowed when the sunlight hit him just right. Yet he couldn't find the right words to describe it. He liked watching Hinata leap into the air. It was like his boyfriend grew wings just to slam the ball over the net. Kageyama loved seeing the determination in Hinata's eyes when he dug to try and save the ball. Everything about Hinata utterly captivated Kageyama.
Stunning. That was the word he was looking for. Hinata was stunning. And he was his.
"Ah, sorry!" Hinata called. The ball had rolled into the road. "I'll grab it!" The light was just starting to change from yellow to red.
It all happened in an instant. A woman was walking with her child, hand in hand. Two boys were walking and talking loudly across the street from the woman. Hinata was in the middle of the road, bending down to pick up the volleyball. Suddenly a car came flying around a corner in a sharp turn.
"HINATA!" Kageyama screamed. But it was too late. Hinata turned too late. With a sickening thud, the car slammed full speed into Hinata. Red blood splattered everywhere. The front of the car was covered in blood. Blood everywhere. On the stoplight. On the sidewalk. It covered everything from head to toe.
Somewhere in the distance, the woman screamed. A child was crying. One of the boys was frantically dialing 119. Kageyama staggered to the road. His head was spinning. Spots danced in front of his eyes. He was going to pass out. Everything fell into darkness.
~~~
Kageyama bolted upright in bed. He was drenched in sweat. Frantically, he checked the time. June 21, still Hinata's birthday. His heart was pounding against his chest. "Oh my God, it was just a dream. Holy shit. What a nightmare." With that, Kageyama got ready quickly and got to the park 30 minutes early. Cicadas cried loudly outside his window.
