Stutter stutter stutter PLONK!
The engine coughs as if dying of old age.
Stutter stutter.
As the car fights to regain control.
VROOM
The engine roars to life giving me control of it once again. There is a shatter in the distance, my boss probably threw a paper weight at the window again. I hear it again and again followed by some screams, did I miss something? Looking at my surroundings I finally realise terror has struck the City. Remnants of cars, buildings caught alight and torn what seemed to be clothes surrounded me. The road is deserted of people but the odd car lay here and there. Further down on a nearby footpath, there’s blood?
Curiosity gets the better of me as I continue to drive down Main Street and stop at a Coffee Shop, there’s someone just standing behind the counter looking absolutely horrified. I try to call out to her, and notice a putrid smell almost of rotting flesh. I call out again, she notices that she has company and turns to look at me. Her face was grey, her hair dripping with a red substance, her eyes were impossibly bloodshot, looking almost lifeless, the fact that she was still able to stand was astounding. Caught up in observing the strange illness, I hadn’t noticed that she limped her way close to my car. Strange growls filled the deserted street, growls that sounded like animals fighting for their food, their prey. In no time silhouettes in which the growls came from, ran furiously towards the sick woman. Soon she was two feet below; bloodied, broken and almost lifeless bodies. I stared not able to realise what was actually happening, she had become a meal to humans acting like vultures fighting for leftovers.
In a panic I absent-mindedly reversed as far away from the scene as I could. The people, animals or whatever these things were saw that I was leaving only to follow, running, attacking each other to try and be first in line to whatever they had in store for me. I take a glimpse at the clock it read 6:30am. At first I thought maybe it was a prank, then I realised that it was serious when I saw an old lady on the ground with a severed leg. Could this end life as we knew it? Is it actually a Zombie Apocalypse?
6:35am, could be edging closer to the end of my life when I see a police officer and a child in her early adolescent years trying to get my attention. I pull over to help the girl into my car, she was carrying heavy artillery. The officer was jerked back viciously, he tries to fight the fact that this might be his end. I reach to pull him in my car when....
BANG!
Blood and limbs flew from the officers attacker, the zombie, as he desperately pulled himself into the car.
Static
“This is an SOS call from Liberty Island, I repeat this is an SOS call from Liberty....” the line went dead.
We drove in silence until I blurted what was on my mind for this whole morning.
‘What is this? Are they zombies? Where do we go now?’
The girl sat silent in horror as the officer replied, ‘The virus has escaped its containment, reanimating the cells mutating people and the dead. I suggest the Prison it would have been evacuated and it is highly secured.’
‘ We can’t survive with no food and water what if the virus is spread through the water?’ My voice showing the worried state I was in.
‘The virus is spread through contact of blood or saliva.’ The girl spoke for the first time. ‘ I’m April by the way.’
The prison was confined, cold and dark a place I never would have wanted to be before the apocalypse. I felt strangely secure and safe, there were survivors with me. We’ll be watching them...
Waiting.
