Belladonna's point of view
"That's not possible," I denied my brother's accusation.
"But she looks like you!" Ezekiel tried to convince me.
"Stop!" I yelled scaring the girl. "There is no possible way that child survived. Stop giving me some sort of false hope, Ezekiel. I can't handle it!"
The girl cowered into Ezekiel's shirt.
"Hey, it's okay," I watched my brother soothe the child.
"What's your name?" He asked her.
"I Kai," the girl whispered.
"This is ludicrous," I said. "We are supposed to be searching for Dianely, not babysitting."
"You're the one who picked her up," Ezekiel pointed out.
"It was only to hurt the boy," I said.
Did he really expect me to scar the child by murdering him in front of her?
"It's nearly dark out now," he said. "Let's set up camp for the night."
"What about the child?" I asked.
"You picked her up, she's your responsibility now," Ezekiel replied. "Look if she's not yours we will bring her back after we find Nel."
I rolled my eyes but agreed. This journey was not fit for a child. All it was going to do was slow us down.
We set out a few blankets and started a small fire. The child hopped around like a careless rabbit. She was prey to everything around her yet was completely oblivious to it. Something I didn't care for about children. They're too easy to lose.
"Ezekiel, get her to sit down before she sets herself on fire," I demanded.
"Oh, so now you want to play guardian," he teased.
"No, I just don't feel like watching a child die tonight," I mumbled.
"Come sit, Kai," he called out to her.
Instead of coming sit next to Ezekiel, the girl placed herself on the blanket next to me. I rolled my eyes, already knowing the look Ezekiel had on his face.
My brother unpacked some food from the bag. More fruit and meat. Ezekiel tossed me an apple to give to the girl. I placed it in front of her and thought nothing more of it.
"Bell," Ezekiel said unamused.
"What now?" I asked irritated.
Rather than answer me, he walked over to the girl and cut the apple into bite-size pieces for her. This whole situation was unnecessary. If only that boy would've been alone.
I massaged my scalp with my fingertips, hoping to alleviate some of the pressure in my head. My eyes glanced over to the girl who was happily biting into the pieces of fruit. My brows furrowed at the sight of the tiny fangs piercing into the apple slice.
I grabbed the girl by the chin to examine her closer.
"Open," I demanded.
"Bell," Ezekiel exclaimed. "What are you doing?"
I ignored him for a moment while I looked over the toddler's mouth. Indeed there was a tiny set of fangs. I let go of the girl and let her continue eating. Ezekiel stared at me waiting for an explanation of my random outburst.
"She has fangs," I whispered.
"Look. I know you don't want to risk yourself getting attached and something happening, but there's no way she isn't yours. Or at least isn't one of us," my brother spoke calmly to me. "I mean there's a lack of certain characteristics but that's nothing compared to everything she does have."
