I looked around as I was escorted to the court. My arms numb and my fingers burnt bad from the Shockfire that encircled my hands. It was purple in color extending from my upper arms all the way to the tips of my fingers, with swirls of green present here and there. That was the power of air and also the reason why my hands were numb. I couldn't and wouldn't be allowed to use my skills. It doesn't matter anyways. It's not like I'm going to try to escape.
Also, there is nowhere to run. The whole land is empty, devoid of the usual noises. No footsteps that crunch over the stone path, no screams of pain from the training youngsters and most of all, no sounds of the speeding wind. Even though I can see the leaves of the trees rustling, I can't hear the sounds that are like a lullaby to me. Maybe the numbness has spread to my ears... not likely.
I turned my attention to the court house looming above me. A shiver went up my spine. As we started mounting the stairs, I fixed my expression to look blank, when all I want to do is create a storm so big that the whole world fills up with chaos. Scream and shout because I feel so terrified and lost without her. She was always strong and stubborn, never willing to accept defeat. A bit too stubborn...
I start trembling but the Carers on either side of me just saw that as a side effect of the Shockfire and so gripped my shoulders to steady me. At that moment, I wanted to rip their arms out and make them suffer along with me. Instead, I inhale and step forward, inside the giant double doors, exhale and close my eyes. It was all quiet and the sound of our shoes sliding across the slippery floor echoed back to us.
I still had my eyes closed. The Carers stopped walking and I heard the sound of a door opening in front of me. I heard the guy on my left mutter, "Get in and get this over with. Don't make it all sappy and emotional." I opened my eyes and looked at him. I gave him the best glare I could muster up in my weak moment. The guy's eyes opened wide in fear and that gave me all the courage I needed to walk into the room.
My first case at our level is held in a small room, with a high seat for the judge in the front. A special seat for the convict, a few more seats for the witnesses, defenders and family. There was also a special seat for the victim but in this case, it was unoccupied. And obviously everyone present here knew why. The family seat held a small person but her presence filled the room and almost suffocated me. I looked away before actually looking at her. I am not strong. Not strong enough to see the accusations, the hatred, and the sorrow that most likely would be swimming through her eyes. So instead, I faced the person who would decide my fate. The judge was tall and pale with shrewd and calculating eyes.
She started her usual speech as I took my seat. The judge paused for effect after saying my name which resonated back to me, blaring in my ears. I couldn't hold her gaze, so I looked down at my shoes feeling like a coward. But the next sentence got me crashing back to reality. "You are being tried for murder."
