June 1st.

To be honest, I knew this day was going to come sooner or later, but I didn’t really think it was going to be this soon. Libby and Kerensa were leaving me today to start their college life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m so happy for them, but they’re leaving me for the summer before I head to England in August. Libby had Kerensa and me to meet her at her house around 9 so that we could help her pack, then make our way to Kerensa’s house to help her pack as well. Libby and Kerensa were riding together, so they figured they ought to just help each other pack before they depart.

I looked at my alarm clock 5 minutes before it was scheduled to go off. I always hated the sound of the alarms in the morning, so I scheduled myself to wake up a couple minutes beforehand to avoid the loud sounds. I stumbled out of my bed to turn off my clock. I put all my balance on my feet as a stretched out my arms to loosen up my tense muscles. I took a deep breath, and moved to my burow to take out my outfit for today. I picked out one of my favorite navy blue sweaters, a simple pair of blue shorts. I always got picked on for wearing a sweater to match with shorts, but what can I say? I like sweaters!

I place my outfit into my bed, and ran to the shower, turned it on and stepped in for a quick wash before the day. After I finished, I wrap a towel around my hair, and another around my dripping body. I step out of the shower, and make my way to my bedroom. I quickly dried off my body, I slipped on the sweater, and put on my shorts then raced to my closet and grabbed a pair of beige oxfords that were hidden under a pile of Converse and Vans. I took a glance at my clock and it read 8:15. I knew that I was running out of time, so I made my way downstairs, grabbed a nutrigrain bar and ran out of the house.

“Do you see my charger anywhere” Libby asked me. I was sitting atop of her bed as she raced around her room looking for everything that she would need at college.

“I’m pretty sure you already packed it” I reply to her as I pet her Pomeranian puppy that has found a place to rest between my legs.  She listened, and quickly skimmed one of her 5 suit cases.

“You’re right, it’s here.” She said as she continued to look around her room for anything else she needed to bring along. Suddenly, we hear a knock on her bedroom door.

“Come in” She screams, as the door opens and Kerensa steps through.

“Hey!” Kerensa said while running to Libby and giving her a massive hug. After her hug, she walked over to me and wrapper her arms around my upper body. She was very gentle; she must have noticed the sleeping puppy between my legs.

“So, why the hell do you need 5 suitcases” I blurt out, confused by the massive amount of stuff that Libby had.

“You never know what you’re going to need! I have to make sure I have clothes for EVERY occasion, and shoes to match those outfits, and the right accessories, and how could I ever leave these books behind?” As she points to her favorite romance novels.

“When are you honestly going to need 3 different pairs of cowboy boots?” I ask Libby and see her face as she tries to conjure up a situation.

“I don’t know! I just can’t leave them behind” I hear her note as she walks out of her room with a large tote heading towards the bathroom.

“Kerensa, how many cases are you bring with you?” I ask the girl sitting on the edge of the bed.

“I’ve got 6 I believe, I’m not too sure. I haven’t finished packing yet” she replies. I will never understand why my friends require to have every single one of their belongings with them when they leave. I am sure that I’d only bring 2 or 3 with me. Enough to put clothes in, shoes, and one filled with miscellaneous crap that would keep me entertained on my days alone.

Libby walked back into her bedroom with a bag filled with her hair straightner, hair blow dryer, a massive amount of perfume, body wash, and a toothbrush. I guess it’s good that these girls are both prepared for their trip, but I can only imagine that their dorms are going to be filled.

“Alright, I’m good. Will you guys help me load this in the Cabby?” Libby asks, holding out a case for me, and a case for Kerensa. We grabbed what we were asked, and walked down the staircase and outside of her house to the small Volkswagen.

“These aren’t going to fit Libby” I say as I turn my head sideways towards the car trying to plan out how the hell they’re going to fit 10 suitcases in that car.

“Sure we will! Top down, and a load of bungees will do the trick” Libby smirks at me and runs into the garage. After 4 minutes, she exits the garage with her arms filled with bungee cords all sizes and colors.

“Alright, so lets put as many as we can in the trunk, and we will put the rest in the backseat” Libby said as she started to lift cases into the truck. We were able to fit 4 cases in her trunk which left one major case for the backseat, and her bathroom tote to join.

“Wow, I’m sorry I doubted you” I say to Libby as she turns around with a satisfied look on her face.

“That’s alright. Now, lets go to Kerensa’s and get her packed.” Libby had already started getting into her car. Kerensa joined after her, and I signal a thumbs up as I get into my Chevy. Libby turned on her car, and started to drive and I follow her lead.

“I thought you only had 6 cases” I question Kerensa as I stare at 8 slammed full suitcases that lay on her floor.

“I said 6, I believe.” Kerensa defended herself, blushing over the fact that she had more suitcases than Libby.

“Jesus Christ, you guys. Your dorms are going to be FULL with shit!” I said to my best friends. They both looked at each other, smiled and gave a chuckle. I knew that they were going to have a great time at Yale. And now they had their own personal mall with them.

“Shit, we need to hit the road” Libby says while looking at her cellphone. I check mine, and notice that it was already noon. They had a near 5 hour drive ahead of them, and they were told to arrive at the dorms at 5:30.

“You’re right” I hear Kerensa say. We all grab two cases, and frowned when we knew that we would have to make a second trip. Packing the backseat of Libby’s Cabby wasn’t as hard as I figured it would be, knowing how great Libby was with fitting in cases to her car. It was like watching her play tetris with the suitcases.

“I’m impressed” I smile at Libby as I see the fully packed car. 9 suitcases strategically stacked in the backseat of her car. It’s fortunate that her car was a rag top, otherwise, this would NOT have been possible.

I knew that they had to leave. This was the exact moment that I was dreading. All three of us were standing behind Libby’s car, looking at eachother. I could feel my eyes start to water, and my lips were trembling. I gazed at their eyes, and they were tearing up just like mine. We stood for a minute, and I broke the ice by running to them and holding both of them in my arms. I was unable to hold it in any longer, and the tears began to poor. I could hear my friends quietly sobbing with me. I held on, not wanting to let them go. These two girls were my everything, but it was time to let go.

I broke away from our hug about 3 minutes later. I grab each of their hands, and look into their watering eyes.

“You guys better not forget about me. I want to get texts every day, updates with what’s going on.” I say, with a slight smile on my face.

“You know that I will be texting you all day” Libby reassured me.

“I love you both” I say to them.

“I love you too Des” They both say in unison.

I let go of their hands, and they knew it was their cue to leave. They both step away and enter the filled Volkswagen. Libby started the car, and I walked to the side of the car. They both look at me, smile and then Libby pressed the accelerator, and drives out of Kerensa’s driveway. I watch the two of them drive away. Once I realized that they were gone, I got into my truck. I closed my door, put the key in my ignition, but I didn’t start my truck. The only thing I did for the next hour was cry.
