Avalon's POV~
Long black strands of hair draped down past my shoulders as I walked down the corridors of the ark. The air was tasteless and recycled. More and more people were feeling light-headed and having issues breathing due to the lack of oxygen. Even I started to get used to being light-headed and yet the ark acted as if nothing was wrong. What was even worse people believed there was nothing wrong and the ark was the perfect place to live. I would much rather risk going to Earth, but I couldn't leave my family. My mother and father told me I was adopted for they couldn't conceive children and my birth mother died soon after giving birth. Despite the fact that they aren't my biological parents I still love them as if they were.
Each day the halls became increasingly more empty, but I always found myself wandering the lonely halls almost everyday. A florescent light beam flickered from the ceiling creating a creepy vibe throughout the corridors. A few guards walked past me and I was sure they glanced back to check out my rear. Assholes. All I could do was ignore their rude behavior and keep on walking. They're guards which meant they're authority stumps mine no matter how perverted they got. Best not to even make a scene.
It was difficult to determine the time of day especially up in space. Most of the time we depended on the announcements on the overhead given by the chancellor. However, the past few days there were no announcements due to the oxygen issue. The council thought it'd be better if we all conserve what little air we have left. So they cut all the announcements unless they were for emergencies. What really irritated me was the council also told people the no longer required announcements instead of informing everyone about the truth. The oxygen levels were dangerously low and people were going to start to die. The only way I know the truth is because of my best friend, Raven. She's one of the top mechanics despite her age and we don't keep secrets from each other no matter what.
Unlike most people Raven was rarely ever home and was typically found in one of the storage rooms rummaging through the junk. Sure enough, Raven was in the first storage unit I checked. Ever since her boyfriend, Finn was arrested she had been trying everything to get her mind off of it. Whatever she got her hands on she was tinkering with it.
"Raven?" The hoarseness in my voice was highly audible, but Raven didn't seem to notice. She didn't even turn to look at me. For a moment I wasn't sure she even heard me, but then she threw whatever was in her hand across the room. Curse words escaped her grasp as she collapsed to her knees in tears. This came to a surprise to me because Raven was the strongest person I know. She never cried. Ever.
Instantly I was at her side rubbing her back comfortingly. Her dark brown-black hair felt soft against my hand as I stroked her back trying to calm her. The sobbing continued making me wonder what on earth could be hurting my best friend like this.
"Shh...What's wrong Raven?" I asked with a mixture of confusion and compassion fluttering in my eyes. A red faced, puffy-eyed Raven gazed up at me as salty tears drifted down her cheeks. I've never seen Raven this upset.
"I'm just done...done with it all..." Raven muttered all in one gasp-like whisper. "What's the point anymore?" Where was all this coming from? This is not the Raven I know as my best friend. Raven never acted like this even when she was going through hell.
"What are you talking about? Raven?! What the hell is going on?" I practically shouted in her face just for her to actually make eye-contact. Her deep brown eyes drowned out by tears that were still falling down her cheeks like tiny waterfalls.
"Finn's gone...They sent them to Earth..They're all gone.." Confusion swirled my mind as I took in what she was saying. Who were 'they'? Earth isn't suppose to be survivable for another hundred years. Why was find sent to Earth if the Earth wasn't sustainable for life? So many unanswered questions I wanted to know. "They're all gone.." Raven repeated until it faded into an inaudible whisper. All of this was blowing my mind. Was Raven telling the truth or was she literally going crazy due to the lack of oxygen? I heard some people were quarantined due to their mental state which was caused by the little oxygen we had left.
"What do you mean 'they're gone'? Raven, you're not making any sense.." I stated backing away from her crumpled self.
"I mean the council sent the underaged criminals down to Earth.." Almost instantly Raven seemed to have collected herself and now was completely serious. "They're keeping it a secret from everyone even from the teenager's parents.." Raven continued not letting the tears come back. This information Raven was telling me about was really starting to frighten me. If the council really did send the kids down to Earth that only meant one thing. The Ark wasn't going to last a hundred more years and they were forced to go through with this plan.
I shook my head not wanting what Raven was saying to be true. It just couldn't be. Could it? Raven slowly got back on her feet with a wary gaze telling me she wasn't joking. What she told me was the one hundred percent truth. Nervously I ran a hand through my jet black hair before gazing back at my best friend.
"Raven..We can't know this.." I freaked out knowing what the council would do if they found out we could be a threat to their plan. Even if we promised not to tell anyone it was the fact that we knew the plan that makes us a threat. We would surely be put into solitare or worse---floated. There were rumors that went around the ark about the chancellor secretly floating someone for some unknown reason about a year ago.
"I know..." Raven's head dropped before she continued, "But what if there was a way for us to go to Earth? Imagine the possibilities!" Raven's face began to glow, erasing any sign of her breakdown earlier. What was going on with Raven? She was acting completely insane and unlike her typical self. These obsurb and out-of-the-blue mood swings were starting to worry me. Then a thought crossed my mind.
"Are you pregnant?" It was a long-shot, but it wouldn't have been the craziest thing that happened this afternoon. The look on Raven's face told me that wasn't the question I shoud have asked.
"What? No! Of course not! Why would you even think that?!" Raven shot back at me with painful confusion.
"Well, you're acting completely nuts! So I assumed.." I drifted off not being able to look Raven in the eyes. She gripped onto my clothing and pushed me against the wall with a sheer intensity. For a moment I feared she might actually be going insane.
"Avalon..You're my best friend, but if you stand in my way of getting to Earth I will end you" Raven snapped immenesly close to my face where I could feel her breath on my bare skin. Slowly I nodded causing her to release her grip. "So are you going to help me or not?" Raven asked with her cunning, mechanical smile.
"Where do we start?" I asked smirking devillishly. I wanted to go to Earth. That was the dream since I was born. Earth. "We're going to Earth Raven"
