Run.

Run.

Don't stop running.

The girl felt her heart thumping hard against her chest. She didn't know if she could last much longer. But if she stopped, they would catch her, and she knew that being caught would mean death.

"Keep running, please, keep running...." she told herself, between two shaky breaths. She didn't need to look back at the her chasers, she knew they were there at the sound of their heavy boots on the streets and their swords hitting their armored legs while they ran. She looked around for an escape, but there was none. The river was on her left and the houses on her right. She couldn't escape by the river because the water was as cold as ice -since it was December- in addition to the fact it was night. The water was black and she could sense the waves crashing against the borders; if she didn't drown because of the icy water, she'd die of tiredness, not knowing where to go. The right side of the path was no better choice. The houses were so close to each other that there was no escape in between. Or else if there was, she couldn't see it through the darkness of the night.

"You can't run away forever! Stop right now!" one of the guards yelled behind her. She felt her legs going weaker and weaker as she kept on going forward. Sweat was dripping on her burning forhead although the rest of her body was freezing. She was wearing light ragged clothing, clothing only there to cover up her frail body, not giving her any warm. Her pants, cut up to her knees, made her shiver even more when she began running trough a place covered by snow and felt the ice scratching her ankles and calves. Her boots were made of damaged leather she couldn't afford to repair, since she had not enough money. Hell, she hardly had enough to eat. She tried to cover up her shirt with her thin jacket but she had troubles finding the only button left on it in the dark. She gave up on it and concentrated on running but suddenly slipped and fell to the cold ground. She felt a pain shot through her ankle and whimpered. But she had no time to rest and quickly got up, ignoring the pain and stumbling, when she heard the footsteps increasingly close.
"Hey! Stop it! We'll got you anyway!" the men screamed behind.
Lidia didn't even know where she was anymore, or where she was going. Since the moment they had started to chase her, she had just run without noticing her surroundings. She had run for her life, and she was still running for it. At the corner of her eyes, she spotted a weak street light and decided to run for it, maybe she could see a way of escape there. She didn't even felt the pain in her ankle anymore because she was numb from the cold. December was a harsh month in this little town of hers, and being chased in the middle of the night was not helping. All she could feel was her heart beating widly and her lungs and throat burning. She wouldn't have known if she was still breathing if it wasn't for the steam she could see coming out of her mouth. She couldn't close it because of her ripped lips that hurt when they touched each other, and she feared she'd stopped breathing if she did. She quickly turned to the right in direction of the street light. She heard someone falling behind her with a loud groan, probably one of the soldier, suprised at her rapid movement change.

When she arrived at the lamp, she looked around for something -anything- that looked like an escape. She spotted a narrow path in between two houses and quickly dashed into it. As she thought, it was very tight, even for her petite body. As she ran through it, she realized how bad her physical condition was, because her shoulders were bumping into the walls in both sides, as she couldn't run normally with her foot hurting. She was stumbling and trying to hold on to the walls as she ran towards the end of the dark path.

"Quick! Catch her you idiots! We can't lose her!" The soldiers were having a harder time than her, since they were bigger. They tried to push each other forward into the path that looked like a black tunnel.

The girl bit her lips, trying to muffle her whimpers. Since she couldn't see anything, she hoped that maybe they couldn't neither. And if she didn't make any sound, maybe they'll think she was gone and go away. She bit even more and charged harder forward, only to be stopped a few seconds afterwards, when she crashed into the cold and hard wall in front of her.
