Chapter 2

Land Deeds

Waking up from my nap I look at the time. My alarm clock read 8:47am. I fell asleep around five o'clock last night. I slept for around fifteen hours...

I get dressed and head to the house to see how Joyce's date with Hopper went. I walk in to see her running around the house mumbling something about magnets.

Getting breakfast I sit and wait for her to calm down. She doesn't calm down. She starts collecting her purse and things. I watch her come to the kitchen to get the magnets off the counter. I say,"good morning" this causes her to jump.

"Oh good, Rowan you're awake. Come on I have something to do" I slip on my shoes and grab a biology book from the counter and follow her to the car.

Joyce tosses me the car keys and says,"You're driving missy." I catch the keys and don't argue. I don't really like to drive but I know I need to learn all the same.

Joyce gives me directions and I messily drive over to hoppers cabin. Screeching to a loud and rough stop I park the car. Joyce looking really stressed gets out of the car heading in.

Joyce knocks loudly on the front door. We wait a minute and hopper opens the door in nothing but a towel. Joyce takes nothing of it and pushes her way in. I on the other hand avert my eyes. Walking in the door and sitting at the small table I start to read my book.

Hopper and Joyce's arguing gets louder causing me to lose focus. I sit and try to concentrate but their arguing is too distracting. Frustrated with the two I yell, "Would you two stop!" I turn to Joyce, "Joyce you missed the date to talk with another man, it is kind of rude." I turn to Hopper," Hopper you can't express your feelings. Can we please just go talk to the major now!?"

They both go silent and gather their things. We all load into hoppers truck. And he drives off toward town.

~time skip~

Pulling up to town hall I can see a bunch of protestors. It must be about the new mall. We get out and head into the nice looking building.

Hopper ignores the secretary and walks right to the majors door. He nods his head towards me to follow. I'm assuming he wants me to follow for protection.

Hopper barges in the door and grabs major Larry by the shirt collar. He pushes him onto the desk and asks him about the star court mall and property. Hopper punches him once and he still doesn't answer. Hopper then motions towards me. Stretching my hand out I make sparks of electricity.

Larry's eyes go big and starts talking really really fast. I must have really scared him. He explains everything about some buyers and land deeds. Hopper grabs Larry  and we head out the door.

We load into the car and head towards the majors house. There we get some land deeds from a safe. Looking at the names I notice it's all areas outside of town. I walk up to Joyce and tell her,"Joyce, aren't all these places by Jordan lake?"

She takes the deeds and head to a map we passed on the way in. "Yes look! And you know what else is by Jordan lake?"

"Uh the power plant." I say unsure. I'm still learning everything in town.

"Yes and four nights ago there was a power outage" huh I forgot about that. I must have been sleeping. I tend to sleep a lot. I get tired easily

Hopper interjects,"Okay so whatever broke your magnets must be on one of theses properties."

Joyce gets excited and says,"And if we find the machine that broke them we can turn it off"

"So we're going to just go search all these houses then?" This sounds like a lot of work and I don't like to do more than necessary.

"Sounds like a good plan to me Rowan." Hopper grabs the deeds and we walk back to the car.
