Sharice(Carr's mom's) POV:
"Ring. Ring. Ring." I got up and walked to the phone and couldn't believe my eyes. It was Jared. Jared and Carr were best friends since they were babies, until her father passed. I don't know what happened after that. She didn't cry. She didn't act out. She didn't do anything at all. She kept up her everyday life, but stopped talking, hanging out with Jared, and socializing altogether. Jared seemed crushed. He always liked her and I always thought they would end up together. I didn't stop thinking so afterwards either, after all, it's not like they died. Where there is life, there is love.
"Hello Jared," I said picking it up.
"Oh. Yes, hello Mrs. Tucker. I just called to say that I found Carr and she is at my house. I hope that is okay. I haven't talked to her in so long," came a voice from the other end: one that seemed sad and full of emotion.
"Thank you. I'm so sorry that you had to lose a friend to something so horrible, but that doesn't mean you can't get her back. Carr has been so out of it ever since the...accident...." my voice trailed off.
"I know," Jared replied solemnly.
"Well, I know she's safe with you, and she needed to get out of this place for awhile. It was just a matter of time before she left anyways," my voice regained some of its false cheeriness.
"Okay......I'm so sorry about what happened." said Jared.
"No need for pity. What's done is done. All we can do is live with the choices that are continually made around us. Just take care of my daughter. I will talk to you later." I hung up, not giving him a chance to answer, but it didn't matter. He just needed to tell me my daughter was fine and now I know she is. Jared would give his life for Carr. That's what scared me sometimes.
Jared's POV:
Carr woke up and leapt to her feet, successfully scaring me while I was sitting on the ground in front of her, watching TV. She probably forgot where she was, but she looked around and then just went back to sleep. God, it felt so natural to sit here like this, just hanging out with her. Carr used to come ere everyday. It was probably so I wouldn't get lonely. She always knew how I felt and always knew what to do about it. My mom died when I was four due to breast cancer, and my dad followed suit when I was sixteen in a shootout in front of a gas station, leaving me to fend for myself.
I still remember when me and Carr met. We were in kindergarten, and I was being bullied. I remember that they were huge kids and I was relatively small. I could see that she was about to come try to stop them, but that would be embarrassing, so I said, "What's your problem," and walked away before they could realize what happened. I walked fast because tears were forming in my eyes. I was such a wimp. I guess she saw because she walked away and asked me if I was okay. Everyone knew who she was because she was like the only black kid in the entire school besides for some in the upper grades. I nodded a reply without looking up and she just sat down right next to me. It made me feel so much better although I didn't say it.
Everyday, she would sit with me whenever I was alone, which was pretty much always. I didn't talk and she didn't try to make me. One day, I looked at her and thanked her. She had saved me too and I was happy. Eventually, we became inseparable and I was contempt thought it would be that way forever. When her father died, she got amnesia and forgot everything-even me-and stopped everything. I knew exactly what she was doing because I did the same thing in kindergarten. It was time for us to switch roles and this time, I would be her savior.
