Topic| Just because you use big words doesn't make your bad replies good

Alright and we are back and today we are discussing the topic of big words and when and where to use them. Now what many of you are thinking, is that using 'bigger' words helps you in being more descriptive, and yes that may be true but if the reply is not very good in the first place, using big words just makes the reply even worse. The statement also applies to any fancy word in general, I'm going to say this a lot and I will say it again. Just because you use fancy words and big words, doesn't mean your reply is better than it was before.

Nor will this make you sound smarter and it will definitely not give you more friends if that's what you are trying to do.

Captain Holt: Grand theft auto. Grand theft auto. Grand theft auto. Dog fraud.
Doug Judy: I sold a guy a fake Pekinese. 'Twas a cat.
Captain Holt: You will not win me over with your use of "'twas.
Doug Judy: 'Twasn't trying to.

Captain Holt has just stated what we were all thinking, the word doesn't even have to be 'Twas, it could a plethora of other words as well, and the thought of using big words to make you sound smarter is just asinine.

Did you see what I did there?

Instead of saying a ton, I said Plethora and instead of saying stupid I said asinine. This is the proper way to use different words, one because of the context of the statement it is easy to understand that the word plethora means many and asinine means stupid. I know these words because of other books and the only reason I know what asinine means is because when you do something stupid you make an ass of yourself. Yea sad day for all of us, but also saying asinine is just a less insulting as to say stupid, like I'd rather have someone say to me 'Don't be asinine,' instead of someone saying 'don't be stupid.'

What I did with the statement above was I switch two words with different words but I didn't over do it, there were only two words I changed and that was it. I also didn't make anyone confused because the context of the sentence was easy to read and understand. In that case that was the perfect amount of 'big' and 'fancy' words, but this also brings up the topic of, you don't need to use special words to be descriptive. Even some of the greatest minds in history said it themselves:

"Oppenheimer suggests that part of this relationship between large words and perceived intelligence can be explained by the notion that using larger words can make it more difficult for others to understand us, thus reducing fluency and making us appear less intelligent."

Now what he did was wrong and we aren't gonna get into that but, what he said is true! When you use big words to sound smarter all you are doing is making yourself seem less intelligent than you really are. And this is an unfortunate thing for anyone to do to themselves as some may avoid role playing with a person because they use big words to sound 'smart'.

I hardly ever use fancy words do my replies are extremely long and descriptive! So I think maybe just use basic vocabulary and you should be fine!

Lastly, I have to mention one big word we all should know:

The word Sesquipedalian can also be used to describe someone or something that overuses big words, like a philosophy professor or a chemistry textbook. If someone gives a sesquipedalian speech, people often assume it was smart, even if they don't really know what it was about because they can't understand the words.

Please...do not be a Sesquipedalian.

That's all for now!

See you next time! ~Ravenclaw
