Gavin was worried.
He checked his phone again. He knew that (your name) was busy, especially during filming season. However, it was uncharacteristic of her to go hours without replying to him. He looked out the window, the sun staring back at him. The light dusted his auburn hair, making his chocolate brown eyes shine caramel. He stood quickly and walked out of his office, not even bothering to lock the door.
The brisk air of Loveland caught him off-guard. He paused walking. Was he being rational, or was he allowing his emotions to dictate what he did? It wasn't like him to be irrational. He bit his lip and looked at his phone again. He sighed.
"What am I doing?" Gavin whispered, turning around to go back into the police station.
Just then, his phone dinged.
He looked at the text he had gotten. It was from (your name)! Gavin quickly opened the text. What he saw disturbed him. "Hlp" was all that was written. He quickly took off, heading for her home. The ginkgo tracker had pinged her location to be at her home. He tapped his gun and clicked the safety off, preparing for the worst.
Gavin approached the steps to her apartment. He knocked on the door. There was no response. He gently fondled the handle and tried to open the door. It was locked. Pointing the barrel of the gun at the lock, he fired, the shot ringing out. The lock fell, and Gavin kicked open the door. "(Your name)!"
It was eerily quiet. A clock ticked away in the hallway, the sound echoing off the walls. Gavin holstered the gun and looked around, calling out her name again. No response. He went to the kitchen and found that the faucet was dripping.
"(Your name), where are you?" Gavin called out.
He went down the hallway and knocked on her bedroom door. When he didn't hear a response, he opened the door gently. It was completely dark, the blinds drawn and the lights shut off. A stream of light flooded into the room, illuminating the slumped-over body of (your name).
Gavin quickly opened the door the rest of the way, biting his lip. "She was sleeping...but why didn't she stir when I broke the door?" He came around the side of the bed, frowning. He kicked something, a rattling sound ringing out. He looked down and saw a nearly-empty pill bottle. He picked it up and froze. "What is she doing with Vicodin?"
Suddenly, it clicked. Gavin dropped the bottle. He shook (your name) trying to stir a response. "Hey, (your name)! It's me, Gavin! Hey! Wake up!" There was no response. He ran his hands through his hair and felt for a pulse. There was a faint bip, bip, bip, but it was irregular and slow. He immediately pulled out his phone. "It's me, Officer Gavin. We have a 10-56A. We need an ambulance immediately."
Gavin held (your name)'s hand, trying to keep track of her pulse. Her skin was cold, almost lifeless. Upon closer inspection of her hand, he saw the tips of her fingers and fingernails were blue. She was barely breathing, her hair matted to her face and tear stains on her pillow that were still damp. Gavin stroked her hair and leaned down, kissing her clammy forehead. "It's okay," he whispered. "You're going to be okay. Damnit, (your name)! Why did you do this?"
She suddenly stirred. Gavin gently held her head up as she looked around, barely conscious. "G-Gavin?" she muttered. "Agh..."
Gavin heard the ambulance rolling up to the apartment complex. He brushed away her hair and smiled at her. "It's me. I'm here."
(Your name) frowned. "I'm so sorry..."
"Hey, don't be sorry. I'm getting you help now, okay? Everything will be fine." Gavin kissed the back of her hand. "Relax. You're safe."
The medics brought in a stretcher. Gavin backed up slightly and allowed them to run their tests. During them, she slipped back into unconsciousness, her last gaze being at Gavin. Her eyes were glossy and filled with confusion and agony.
The ride to the hospital was bumpy and nerve-wrecking. Gavin couldn't stand still as the medic checked her vitals. He clung to the metal pole on the top of the ambulance, his back arched from being too tall to stand upright. One hand was in his pocket while the other steadied himself as they hit a bump.
Once they were at the hospital, they took her measurements and tried to find the exact dosage she had taken. Then they opened her mouth and slipped the tube down her throat. Gavin watched, worry etched into his face as they began to pump (your name)'s stomach, monitoring her pain levels as they did so. She thrashed slightly, urging a doctor to hold her down.
I can only imagine the pain she's in, Gavin thought as they wheeled her into a hospital room. God damnit, what was she thinking, deciding to suddenly overdose like this?
Gavin waited in the room until later that evening. He lifted his head from his hands when she stirred, moaning. He gently took her hand, cautious of the IV in her arm. She looked around the room and saw Gavin. She smiled, then turned away, her face falling.
"(Your name), what were you thinking?" Gavin said, worry in his voice. "Why did you overdose?"
"Black Swan," she whispered, making Gavin furrow his brows. "They were coming after me. They said they would hurt you... so if I killed myself, then they wouldn't bother you..."
Gavin shook his head. "As long as I'm an Evol agent, they'll always be after me." He wanted to add that he too would be chased down because of his personal Evol, but he didn't want to reveal that news to her in this state. "How did you even get access to Vicodin? That's prescription-only medication. You haven't had any surgeries or anything, either. How did you get it?"
"It was under my father's name," she said, weakly touching her forehead. "I found them in the back of the medicine cabinet. I don't know why I didn't get rid of them after he died."
Gavin sighed and placed his head on (your name)'s hand, making her turn to him. "I'm so glad you're alive, (your name)," he whispered. "When I saw those pills and you unconscious in the bed, I thought I was too late..."
She sighed. "I'm so sorry, Gavin. I didn't want to die. I did it to try and protect you."
"I don't need protecting," Gavin said sternly. "I'm a cop, remember? It's my duty to protect you." When she looked away, Gavin touched her chin, making her turn towards him. "Hey, look at me. I'm not angry with you. Far from it. I was just worried about you. I was worried I didn't make it in time..."
(Your name) touched Gavin's cheek. He held her hand close, closing his eyes and fighting tears. She gently shushed him, repeating the words, "you're my savior" to him. Deep down, he knew that he was her savior, but he wasn't the one that had originally saved her. The opposite had happened.
She had saved him.
