"How do you feel, Willow?"
Willow frowned and rubbed her stomach. "It hurts a little, but nothing unbearable. I can still wait to go to the hospital."
I frowned. Willow's water had broken earlier that day, but it was still too early to take her to the hospital. She was sitting down in a producer chair, rubbing her back in pain. She wanted to finished the filming before she left, but it was clear that if we waited much longer, she would pop on set.
"Lucien should be here soon," I said, looking at the papers. "Once he's done with his scene, we'll be good to pack up and get you to a hospital."
As soon as those words left my mouth, Lucien appeared. He was wearing his usual white lab coat, a black shirt with a purple tie, black pants, and dress shoes. He looked for me, and when his lavender eyes found me, he smiled. He walked over and noticed me touching Willow's arm gently.
"What's going on?" he asked, making both of us jump.
"Oh, nothing," Willow said, glancing at me nervously. "Just a little pain."
Lucien nodded in understanding and turned to me. "Where do I stand and what should I do?"
"Uh, stand under the microphone by the bench. There should be some people that are going to ask questions." I ruffled through the papers. "Don't worry about a script. Just be as scientific as you can."
"Ow!" Willow cried, making Lucien and I turn to her. She raised a hand in apology, rubbing her sore stomach. "Sorry."
I looked at her. "Willow, you can't hold off anymore. The contractions—they're really close now."
Lucien raised his eyebrows. "Are you in labor, Willow?"
"Ha! Don't make me laugh, Professor. I have three weeks until I'm due. The baby's not gonna be here anytime soon."
"Don't lie, Willow. We need to get you to a hospital right away. It's been under five minutes for each contraction." I set the papers down. "Lucien, help her out of the chair."
Lucien and I grabbed her arms and helped her out of the chair. Her legs were shaking, her face contorted with pain. Willow was trying hard not to cry out as we walked her towards the elevator. We got in and pressed the button, going down.
Suddenly the elevator paused. It gave a jolt, causing us to jump in our skin. Lucien pressed a button, and nothing happened. He pressed the "open door" button, but nothing happened. A beeping noise ensued.
"We're stuck," he said, pressing the emergency button. "We're going to be here a while."
I looked at him. "No, we can't stay here! Willow is going to give birth soon." Willow let out a cry and sank to her knees, clutching her stomach tightly. I laid her back gently. "Never mind, this baby is coming now."
Lucien's eyes widened. "Do you know how to deliver a baby?"
I winced. "Uh, I've seen stuff on it, but no. Have you?"
"That's not my field of expertise," Lucien frowned as Willow let out another cry of agony.
I sighed. "Give me your lab coat."
Lucien took it off and handed it to me. Willow was reaching up and grabbing the railing, her breaths ragged. I laid it over her legs and waist. Thank God Lucien was tall; it covered her well. Willow frowned, sweat beading up on her forehead.
"Don't tell me I'm gonna have this baby in an elevator!" she cried, gripping the railing so hard her knuckles turned white.
"Looks like it," I said, frowning and taking off her leggings. "Willow, you're gonna have to breathe. You can't keep wasting energy." I turned to Lucien. "Grab her hand."
Lucien came around and knelt beside her, holding her hand. He wiped her brow with his hand, brushing strands of hair away from her flushed face. I was sweating, my nerves getting the better of me. I placed her leggings underneath her and saw that she was crowning. That baby was going to be here any minute, whether the elevator moved or not.
"Agh!" Willow cried, gripping Lucien's hand so tight I heard him grunt.
"Breathe, Willow," I said. "Okay, on the next one, I need you to hold your breath and push."
Willow looked at me in agony. "What? You can't be serious! I'm waiting till we get to the hospital!"
"Willow, this baby is coming out now, whether you want it to or not," I said. "You've got two people here with you. Lucien's more qualified to deliver a baby than me. But you're going to have to trust us."
"You'll be fine, Willow," Lucien said, giving her a soft smile. "Just do what (your name) says."
Willow frowned. "Fine, whatever. Just get this thing out of me!"
On the next contraction, Willow pushed as hard as she could, almost breaking Lucien's hand. I ran my finger along the edge, feeling the baby's head slightly emerging. She kept pushing until the baby's head was halfway out. I smiled at her.
"You're doing good," I encouraged. "We need another good push."
Willow pushed again, crying out. The baby's head came out. I gently held it, my hands covered with amniotic fluid and blood. Willow gave another strong push, and the baby tumbled out into my arms, screaming loudly. I held the baby close, using Willow's leggings to gently wipe away the blood from the baby's eyes. The baby sputtered out fluid from its mouth and started crying louder.
I smiled happily at Willow. "It's a girl!"
Willow held out her arms and I gave her the baby. She cried, snuggling the baby close to her. The umbilical cord was still connected, but needed to be snipped ASAP. I didn't have the tools to do so, so I didn't bother with it. It was only then that I realized I was covered in fluid and blood, my arms dripping red.
Lucien frowned. "Are you okay?" he asked me as I stared at my arms.
"I-I'm good," I said, my breath hitching. "Just not used to so much blood." I felt my stomach jump. I was going to get sick. The smell of copper flooded my nostrils. I forced the bile back and tried my hardest not to vomit.
Suddenly, Lucien brought me to his chest. The horrible smell was replaced with his scent of fresh rain and grass. I looked at him, my eyes shimmering. "Lucien," I whispered, holding my arms out to not make anymore of his clothes bloodied. "I don't want you to get blood on your clothes."
"Don't focus on the blood," he said. "Only focus on me."
I closed my eyes and took in his scent. Suddenly the elevator began to move. The doors opened and EMTs rushed in. Lucien and I moved out of the way as they tended to Willow and her baby. They carried her away on a stretcher. I told Willow I would meet her at the hospital after I cleaned up.
Lucien smiled softly at me. "Allow me to take you home."
I nodded. "Thank you."
