Who are you?
The words echoed through me, and my heart dropped. My whole body felt numb. I remembered the countless birthday parties and sleepovers that I'd attended with Rose. I remembered her making me laugh and baking me cookies when I broke my ankle in second grade. All of our inside jokes. The secret language we made up. Our special bond.
"Rose it's me, Lily. Your twin. I'm so glad you're OK. For a while I thought that you, that, that you were-"
"Stop." Rose's voice cut through. "I just woke up, and I have no idea where I am and some stupid moody teenager comes in and claims that she's my twin sister? This is bullshit!"
"Rose stop this. Stop this now!"
Eric put his hand on my shoulder. "Lily, we should give her some space."
"Damn right you should give me some space you crazy bitch!"
The doctor raced in.
"Sedate the patient!" he shouted.
The nurse took a syringe and pushed it into Rose's arm.
"Rose it's me, Lily!" I screamed.
"Bitch get OUT of my room!"
I found myself being dragged out of the room as I struggled to get back to my sister. I was seated on a couch by a tall, strong person. I couldn't see who it was through the flood of tears. I shook and sobbed. And then a familiar voice "It's OK . You're going to be okay." It was Eric. He held me tight and I cried into his shoulder for an eternity, until the tears subsided. He held me for a long, long time. And as the doctors and nurses and patients rushed by in a blur, I felt for a split second that everything was going to be OK.
