Octavia sped down the highway without a care in the world. I slouched in my seat and tried not to dwell on the past. It would be easier if I just never spoke of the past, my past. Life would be easier for everyone if I just remained numb. Octavia rambled on and on about what she and I were going to do when we arrived in town; how we would shop, pig out on junk food, and she would catch me up on all of the movies that were out now. "Sable we are going to have the best girls night ever, we gonna watch so many chick flicks and eat our weight in junk food, all while the huge party is going on so no one will bother us. Maybe my friend Helena will come too, it will be awesome don't you think?", she asked happily. I nodded with a ghost of a smile on my lips.
We used to be so close, we used to be the best of friends. Now we were further apart than ever; I guess that's what divorce does to a family, I guess that is what being out of contact for six years does to people. She seemed happy about everything, her personality matched her appearance, it mirrored her effortless, innocent beauty. I was different, I was more subdued and dark, mom always used to say that I had a subtle beauty, a more understated beauty that she said suited me perfectly.
"Octavia, how's mom?", I asked curiously. An even larger smile appeared on her face, "She can't wait to see you, she has been bugging me about you for so long, but doesn't like to leave the territory since the incident", she replied trailing off in the end. What is the incident? What happened? Questions about this so called incident were flooding my mind and yet I knew not to ask. I smiled at the idea of seeing mom again. We entered the territory that was now more of a compound, fenced in, and lined with no trespassing signs. Wolves flashed through the forest faster than I have ever seen a werewolf run. There was a kind of feeling about this place, as if something horrible had irreversibly changed the territory.
"Octavia, what happened here?", I asked hesitantly. Her mood faltered slightly, "A lot has happened since you left with dad, Sable, so much that I can't tell you right now", she informed me in solemn tone. I nodded and focused on the familiar scenery. This place has been ingrained in my memory since I left, and when I was with the hunters it was the place I dreamed about at night. Every part of me just wanted to get out and run through the woods like I did when I was little and enjoy the freedom that I had lost so long ago.
We drove silently through the expanse of the territory. She seemed to be deep in thought and I was just trying to stay awake. "Sable you can sleep we aren't gonna be there for a couple hours still", Octavia said in a monotone. I tried to relax but there was still a lot of tension in the car. Eventually I fell into a dark and dreamless sleep.
I felt a hand on my shoulder trying to wake me. "Hey, we're here, we need to go check in with the Beta", Octavia woke me. With a groan I got out of the car and leaned on my cane as she led me to the door of a massive house. Everything inside seemed larger than life, the style gave the entire place a very modern and sterile feel. The house was nice but somehow a little unsettling.
"Octavia, he is ready for you both", a man said in a professional tone as he walked into the entry hall where we were standing. He wore an impeccable black suit and tie and a white shirt, he was stiff and acted in a cold impersonal manner as he led us toward someone. It wasn't like this when I left it was laid back and welcoming, now it seemed more like a business than a pack.
"Hello Mr. Winters, how was your trip back?", a voice inquired from just inside an open office. "It was just fine, Beta, sir", she replied in a very professional manner. The man who led us here pushed me into the office and I tried to stay calm but meeting new people was now a daunting experience. "Beta, this is my sister Sable Winters, she used to live with us until my parents divorce", Octavia told him softly.
"Hello Sable, I am Simon Soka, Beta of the Massacre Moon Pack, what is your business here?", He asked looking at me skeptically.
"Um Sir, I am here because, I uh well, am recovering from a hard couple years, and visiting my family", I quietly replied as I stared at the ground and tried not to make eye contact.
"Well Octavia, everything seems to check out, you may go home to your mate, he has been anxiously awaiting your return", Simon informed her with a small smile.
Octavia smiled a little at the mention of Dylan, she led me out the door and back to her car. I lagged behind her because my knee began to hurt, with just the small amount of walking. "Sable we are going to have to check in again next week when the Alpha returns", she informed me.
"When did he leave?",I asked wondering why he wasn't here.
"He left a year ago to undergo intense training and in turn take over after the Incident", she told me. I nodded and stepped into her car.
The ride was relatively quick to her house. She lived only a few miles away from the main pack house. "Dylan the third in command, that's why we live so close to the pack house", she said happily. I smiled and unbuckled as we pulled up to her house. Her home was beautiful. It was the perfect blend of modern design and rural woodland feel that made the house welcoming and cozy. A man came out of the house looking furious about something. He was yelling into a cell phone, this caused me to flinch with every increase in volume. The only thing that was going through my mind right then was; they used to be like is, they used to hurt me when they were angry. Octavia walked toward him while I shrank back into the car.
"Dylan, calm down, what's wrong?" Octavia asked him in a angry yet soothing voice as he hung up the phone. He was red with rage as he tried now shift. Octavia reached out and touched him with a tender confidence that I have only seen in true mates. He pulled her into him and kissed her passionately. This is how mates are, hot and cold, passionate, caring, ever changing, and pure hearted. I was now on the ground my knees to my chest and attempting to calm my panic.
"Damn it Dylan you scared her", Octavia growled angrily at him as she slowly approached. I was shaking ever so slightly and trying to get back to where I was, to my numb state of mind. Octavia pulled me from the ground and led me inside of her home. She sat me down one of the couches in her living room while she went to go and talk to Dylan.
"Their back Octavia, the rogues are coming back", I heard faintly from the kitchen and stiffened. Rogues were known to be vicious vengeful wolves who thrive on blood and pain. They entered the living room and she led Dylan to me as I looked at him skeptically as he approached.
"Hello, I am sorry about before, I am Dylan", he introduced himself and held out his hand. Cautiously I placed my hand in his and said,"It alright, I am Sable nice to meet you". We shook hand and let go of each other, I sat as far away from him as I could and tried to act natural.
"So why did you decide to visit after all this time Sable?", he inquired.
"Um I had a tough couple years and needed to see Octavia, I mean I was in a coma for six months", I said lightly trying to seem normal. He smiled a little bit and looked over at Octavia with a curious face.
"Why were you in a coma?", he asked.
"I don't want to talk about it", I informed him in a matter of fact tone and turned to Octavia, "I am a little tired would you please show me to where I am going to be saying", I politely asked in order to get away from Dylan. She nodded and lead me down the hall and into a huge room near the kitchen. It was beautiful, teal walls with white, teal, and grey furnishings and bedding. The room looked a lot like my childhood room. "I love it Octavia, thank you", I told her gratefully.
"Give him a chance Sable, he isn't normally like he was today. A lot has happened today, and it has made him in a bad mood", she said quietly. "I will give him a chance, Octavia, I promise", I replied and took off my shoes, hung my cane on the closet door, and got in the bed.
I could swear I had never slept so well in my life. This place put me at ease, made me feel safer than I have felt in years. They were already up, I could hear them in the kitchen making breakfast. I got up and staggered to my cane. As quickly as I could walk, I went to the kitchen. Octavia sat at the counter watching Dylan cook eggs and bacon on the stove. I sat beside her. "Good morning", I said to the two of them.
"Good morning Sable, the food's almost ready", he asked. I was going to like it here I finally felt at home. Dylan served breakfast and we all ate in a comfortable silence.
