This is the life: lounging on the couch, watching bad romantic movies, and somehow feeling comfortable with my sister's best friend. As they cried I felt home again. Octavia and Helena were balling, and I wondered why. The movie wasn't sad at all. I guess that's what girls do. I shrugged and walked to the kitchen to begin cooking some more popcorn in the microwave.
I got back and Helena and Octavia were sitting on the floor. "Hey come on, we're gonna play truth or dare", Helena informed me.
"Truth or dare?", Octavia asked me. I thought about it for a moment and answered, "Dare". Octavia thought for a moment and then said, "I dare you to eat the rest of the Swiss rolls". I laughed and jokingly shoved two in my mouth, there were four more packs in total.
"Truth or Dare? Octavia", she asked.
"Truth", Octavia replied. "What is having a mate like?", Helena asked with a wistful smile on her face. She always talks about when she finds her mate, and how magical it will be. I on the other hand have accepted that I won't have a one true love, nor a happy ending. As far as I am concerned I am beyond saving.
"It's like the movies, you know, love at first sight and all that jazz, but it's stronger. More than an attraction. Having a mate is like being home for the first time in your life. Loving your mate is like breathing, effortless. We fight like we're married, play like we're kids, and protect each other like brother and sister. Dylan, is my first everything, and my last everything. Having a mate is a blessing and an honor", Octavia said with pure conviction in her voice and Helena looked so excited to meet her mate.
For several hours I listened to the two of them reminisce about their childhood and happy memories and I enjoyed hearing about them. Helena talked about her favorite things and Octavia spoke of her favorite things and gossiped about people in the pack.
"So, Sable what's your happiest memory?", Helena asked.
"Um, well my happiest memory would have to be, um, when Octavia and went to a Red Sox game for my birthday with my dad", I replied smiling, remembering how much fun it was. Helena was about to reply when we heard wood splintering.
I quickly got up and was pulled to the ground roughly by Octavia. "Shh, it's the rogues", she hissed at me and then scented the air. Helena did the same and stiffened. I heard them laughing and breaking things as they made their way towards us. I noticed when they froze and heard them whisper to one another.
"Come out and face us", one of them growled.
Before Octavia could stop me I stood up and walked toward them. I did this so they could get away and tell someone, so they could get help. The biggest one grabbed me roughly by my upper arm and dragged me through the kitchen and into the entry hall.
The rogues were savage. They found a kind of rush through my pain. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the tear stained faces of Octavia and Helena exiting the house from the side door. I didn't know weather they would come back or not but I could only hope that they would bring help.
"What do you want?", I asked looking at the rouge straight in the eye. All four of them laughed and the one holding me painfully against the wall replied, "Isn't it obvious, little girl?" I knew exactly what he meant but I wanted to stall him so I said, "Enlighten me, Its not as obvious as you think". He looked at me as if I was stupid, but didn't realize what I was doing.
"Listen girl, and listen good, I will not say this again. I am Xavier Fontaine, leader of the rogues, and I want revenge This pack took my mate, and I will have my vengeance", Xavier growled in my face letting his putrid breath wash over me. I coughed at the scent and was punched hard in the stomach and then thrown into the wall. Physical pain is easy because its fleeting, these rogues could beat me all day and I would take it, the hunters were different, they played on my emotions, they convinced me that I deserved what they gave me. The rogues took turns kicking and beating me, while one hurt me the others ran around the house gathering the valuables and supplies from around the house.
"Girl now its time to have some real fun", He told me with an evil smirk on his face and he lifted me from the floor that now held a pool of my blood. My face was covered in blood and I winced as he moved me from my position on the floor. Xavier carried me from the entry hall to Octavia's bedroom. The room was no longer the pristine sanctuary it was only an hour before, now the only part of the space that remained intact was the bed. The black bedspread was still flat on the mattress and the pillows remained white.
Xavier laughed and threw me onto the bed. I knew exactly what he was going to do. He stalked towards me and scrambled across the bed to Dylan's nightstand. I subtly pulled the drawer open and found a silver dagger. I grabbed it and put my hand under the pillow to conceal the knife. Xavier ran his hands roughly up my body and right as he began attacking my neck with his mouth I took the dagger and stabbed it into his neck. His blood sprayed from the wound when I pulled the knife from his. He let out a gurgling scream and his men charged into the room. Xavier was not dead, the only way to kill a werewolf is to cut out the heart or by decapitation. Xavier would be unconscious for a couple hours at most. Xavier's men were enraged by the sight of their leader bloody on the ground. I backed away and listened, hoping to hear the arrival of help, but all I heard were the enraged growls of the rogues.
They began helping Xavier and didn't see me creep out of the room. I expected them to be back by now, but it was seven miles to the pack house in the dark. As quietly as I could I picked up the phone and dialed Dylan's cell number.
"Hello, Dylan phone, Dylan speaking", He greeted.
"There are rogues here, Octavia left to find you",I whispered into the phone looking over my shoulder to make sure the rogues weren't coming for me.
"I know we're on our way Octavia just told me, hang in there", He told me quickly. I heard another man's voice speaking in the background and then was picked up and thrown by one of the rouges. His eyes were dark with anger, but I felt and strong relief that help was coming. The rogues were all savage, because of a great loss, they were all so filled with an uncontrollable rage that their humanity was slipping away.
I shielded my head and face I curled up in a ball on the floor taking the kicks. They carried Xavier downstairs and placed him on the leather couch in the living room and cleaned the blood off his face and neck. I heard the rumble of the car engine pull up to the house. With an angry smile I stood up and sweetly informed them, "they're here". I all but sang it and they replied with a punch to the face. The impact caused to tumble to the floor. One of the rogue pulled my from the floor and raised his hand to hit me again.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you", Dylan growled at the rogues. The rogue stiffened and dropped me to face Dylan who was half shifted.
I felt him before I saw him. His power filled the room as he entered with an angry confidence. I didn't know who he was but he gave off an air danger and strength. At first he didn't see me, but when he scented the air, his penetrating gaze landed on me. I could feel the air get heavy at his new found rage, when he looked at me. He scared me, the way he looked at me with anger. I scrambled away from him curling up in the corner as far from him as possible. He let out a growl when one of the rogues charged him. One second the rogue was alive and well and the next he was dead on the ground with a hole in his chest.
"Dylan, keep that one alive", he growled at Xavier,"We can question him later". His voice sent shivers down my spine.
"Will do Alpha" Dylan replied. The Alpha slowly approached me. The anger was still there when he looked at me, and he seemed to get more enraged as he neared me.
"I'm not going to hurt you", he told me in his velvety smooth baritone. He picked me up gently from the corner but I still winced when he touched the new bruises that were forming on my back and ribs. His touch sent shocks through my body and made me feel safe, made me feel at home. One word came from my lips before I could stop it:"Mate". Even through his rage a ghost of a smile reached his lips.
"My name is Leo Knight Alpha of this pack, and you are?", he asked me in a soft voice as he carried me to the car.
"Sable", I told him. Leo didn't press for anymore answers, he simply held me as we drove to the house, and before we even started moving I fell asleep in his arms, with my head on his chest.
