Choi Jin-Wook was born in Gimpo, South Korea. His father, Choi Jong Duk is a retired football player who played full back position for South Korea and won the 1978 Asian Games. He was selected as the Korean Footballer of the Year in 1976.

As a child Choi was always involved in football and had an interest in the sport, during his childhood he moved to Seoul as an infant due to his father's team transfer. However in 1995 Choi's parents placed him in the Pohang Steelers academy.

Choi came through the academy at Pohang Steelers, the same club that former La Galaxy defender Hong Myung Bo played for. However, Choi was a ball boy in an Pohang Steelers home match in 1999 when he was a youth player. At that time, his role model was striker Hwang Sun-hong, who played for .Bayer Leverkusen II and Wuppertaler SV.

Apart from his native language Korean, Choi is also fluent in Japanese, Chinese (mandarin), French, Turkish, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and English. His agent Hong Sa Wook said Choi was so determined to make himself a success in Europe that he learned English by watching episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants and Samurai Jack.
