The last thing I stole was food, for the starving citizens. I had on a slick black jacket, and a pair of dark skinny jeans. I walked toward a small food market, slipping an apple in my pocket. It was too easy, since I was used to being ordered around by the citizens. I wasn't sure if it was right, but I wanted to help the poor. I handed a little girl who wore raggedy clothes the apple I 'borrowed' and waved a goodbye. Just then someone grabbed my shoulder. I yelped in pain as her nail dug into my skin.
"Your under arrest criminal number 281, for stealing!" I managed to slip away, running as fast as I could. I put on my hood, and ran towards a crowd of people.
"Wait!" I didn't want to get caught, knowing I had to take care of my sweet little sister. I never wanted to imagine leaving her. I swiftly made sharp turns, hoping I would loose the cop. I peered over my shoulder, not a person in sight. But, just as I turned back around, she was there. And in her hands, was a gun.
"I'll tell you a little secret. The police department knew, no ordinary human could catch you. That's why they hired me," she showed her large fangs, scales appearing all over her body.
"What..are you..?" I was hesitant in asking. Ive heard many stories about monsters unknowingly living among us, but never believed it to be true.
"What am I? Not human if that's what you mean," she stared lovingly at her gun. Showing my weakness will only be again ts me. I have to stay calm. Come on Ruth, youv'e got this. We can trick this hag, easy. Iv'e done it many times before. I could hear every click of her high heels, each time she stepped towards me.
"Did I mention, I could read minds?" I'm done for. I cant trick a monster, with special powers. I couldn't win. They're going to take me away. I noticed my hands trembling in fear. I didn't want to be taken into that place.
"So, you were thinking of a way to let me off guard and trick me I suppose?" she saw right through me. My days of evading the police was over.
"Did you think I was an amateur? Do you know how many years Ive been undercover? Your facial expression shows it all. I didn't even need to read your mind. If you weren't such a high ranked criminal, I would of let you go," she tapped her foot, waiting for me to reply.
"Im sorry..-" I fiddled with my jacket.
Her eyes widened, "You were really stealing for the sake of the citizens, correct?"
"Of course!"
"This is all I can do for you, sorry. I have to turn you in, so I can feed my family, but Ill tell you some secrets of The Chasm, and another way to help you calm down,"
I began crying like a baby. I didn't want to go! It was my worst nightmare! "No! NO NO!!!!"
The lady came over to me, and gave me a big hug, "Sweetie, I'm so sorry. Please, just listen---I will care for your sister while your gone, and feed her, and everything! And, I'll also give you a journal I wrote while in The Chasm-"
"You were in The Chasm? But they said, no one ever came back-"
"Alive? Haven't you learned to not trust what the government says by now? They tell you lies, and keep away the truth. Please forgive me for turning you in. But, this is the easiest way, or they would of caught you," she sighed, "The journal I wrote has many facts about how to stay alive, and how to protect yourself from the monsters. And just as I did, you may figure out that your no ordinary human," what did she mean by ordinary human? Am I not human?
"What do you mean by-"
"Enough of that. Here," her hand went into her pocket, and she handed me a small notebook. The outside was made of black leather, and the cover had the name, 'Caliber.' That was my last name. Now why would---- It sort of made sense.
"Your my-!"
"Yes, mother. I'm not dead, yet. I was sent to The Chasm and was ordered to stay out of sight," her smile faded. "Enough of me, what's more important, is you. I will stay here beside your sister, while you crack the puzzle. Your a brave and smart girl. I know you can do it,"
"But.."
She tugged my arm, "Are you ready?" I had to do this. I had to come back alive. For Eveleny. I couldn't back out of this, now. I nodded my head and soon we were in sight. Three officers glared at me with hatred.
"So we finally caught you huh?"
"Actually, she's the one who caught me. You guys, were the easiest cops to evade from. So I wouldn't be proud of it,"
One of the men slapped me across my face, "Shut up! You have no right to be talking!" my face stung, as I spit blood on the street. I could see my mother restraining herself from killing them all. They grabbed my arm, and that was the last time I saw my mother.
After I said goodbye to my sister, they took me towards a gate. There was fog, and I could sense dark auras.
"So where ya taking me?" Of course I already knew the answer.
The blond officer laughed, "To a very scary place where bad kids like you go,"
I flashed a bright smile, "Oh! So like a time out room?"
A tall guy with dark short hair that looked younger than me walked in chains next to the other guard. He laughed to himself. I can't lie, he was pretty cute. He must of been arrested too, he wore dirty clothes, but that made him look even manlier.
"I wouldn't be laughing you peasant! Your going in with her!" the cop's face was bright red.
"Oh that's hot, thanks officer," I couldn't help laughing at that one. What made him even more perfect, was his British accent. Did I ever tell you that I adore British accents?
"Love the accent," I imitated him. Sounded pretty good too.
"Be quiet, both of you!" the cop was fuming. He slammed the gate closed, leaving us inside.
The boy turned to me, "Well that wasn't very nice. By the way, the names Alec," he gives a cute wink to add emphasis.
I lightly smiled, "My names Ruth,"
Alec crossed his arms, "That's a tough name for a pretty little lady like you,"
I giggled to myself, "Uh, this pretty little lady is a high ranked criminal with her face on a wanted poster,"
He suddenly grabbed my chin, "Well, aren't we quite the duo?"
"Maybe we are, maybe we're not," I left him behind as I walked toward the entrence to The Chasm, silently grinning to myself. What a total hottie.
