I didn't set an alarm the night before since my dad said he would wake me up. Although those were his words, I just so happened to wake up at 3 in the morning, on the dot. I'm not sure as to why I woke up, I was sleeping pretty well. Maybe it was because I was cold.Once I opened my eyes I started to shiver, the hairs on my arms standing up just as they did when I first walked in yesterday. I don't know why, there was no shift in the air.
I sighed, sitting up. Running my hands down my face, it was then that I could've sworn I heard a whisper.
"What was that..." I muttered, looking around. The bay window didn't have a curtain, so the moonlight outside was illuminating the pitch black space. Coming to the conclusion that it was just my imagination, I laid back down, pulling the covers over my head. "What is the freaking temp in here?"
I rubbed my arms up and down in an attempt to get warm, considering the comforters weren't doing me any justice. I took a deep breath in, and then let it out through my mouth.
"What the..." I watched as I could actually see the oxygen I had just released float through the air. As far as I could tell there wasn't a draft in the house.
Just as I was about to get up, everything went back to normal. Cold spots like these usually indicate that a spirit is present, right? Does that mean this place is haunted? I had no idea, my mind was half asleep and I wasn't thinking straight. So as soon as my head hit the pillow for the second time, I went back to my slumber.
...and just like that, after what felt like five minutes but was really an hour and a half, I was being shaken awake by my father.
"It's 4:30 hun, time to get up!"
I groaned, gripping onto the covers a bit tighter.
"Why are you waking me up so early? School doesn't start until 8?"
"I know, but it'll give you enough time to get ready, eat breakfast, do whatever you do, and then find the school."
"It'll give me enough time to sleep for 30 more minutes..." I said, my eyes still closed. I heard my dad laugh, then he walked out and shut the door. I started to think about when I had originally woken up earlier, and how strange it was. These thoughts didn't allow me to get my extra 30 minutes of rest, so I just got out of bed.
Walking into the bathroom I did what any person getting ready for the day would do. After my normal morning bizz was done, I took a shower. Once I did that, I dried myself and started putting on what little makeup I felt was needed.
First day of a new school, gotta make a good impression, right?
"Awesome. I think that's well enough." I smiled to myself in the mirror. Now that I had undergarments on, I stepped out to my room and walked to my new closet. "What to wear..."
Scrimmaging through hangers and drawers, I finally pulled out a black and orange checkered flared skirt. I paired it with a baggy black shirt that happened to have an orange butterfly on it.
I put them on, tucking in the shirt and adjusting it just how I wanted. Then, I put on some black ankle boots. I grabbed a scrunchie and popped that sucker on my wrist because why not?
Looking in the mirror one last time, I was pretty content and confident with myself. Next, I worked on my hair just to my liking and winked at my reflection.
A little self love really does the trick.
Apparently the school already had my books and locker ready, so I didn't need to bring a backpack. I walked downstairs and saw my dad about to head out the door. He was putting on his coat and shoes.
"Dad, did you bring the pop tarts in from the car?"
"Yeah, in the cabinet on the far left! Bye sweetie!"
He didn't even give me time to answer as he slammed the door shut. I sighed, reaching for the pastries.
It was about 10 minutes after I had eaten my breakfast goods. I looked at the clock, it read 6. I still have so much time, what am I even gonna do? Should I just go ahead and leave? If I get to the school early I guess I could obviously wait. It would give me plenty of time to find it. I was contemplating my next actions when I finally just decided to leave.
I exited the house, locking the door behind me. It was a foggy morning, and it was a bit humid. The weather felt nice though, so that's a plus. I took out my phone from the invisible pocket the skirt had. Typing in "Baxter High" brought up an address. I clicked it, and it started the route directions.
And so my journey through the forest began. It would've been a peaceful walk, if it wasn't for the feeling of being watched every 5 seconds. I know I was just paranoid, I mean who wouldn't be? I'm all alone in the woods, not to mention a whole new town I know nothing about, and the only thing that's guiding me is an old electronic device that may or may not malfunction at any given point in time.
It really depends on how much luck I have.
According to the directions, it's only about a 20 minute walk, and I've been walking for maybe 10, so it shouldn't be too much longer. I ignored the wretched scenarios my mind was making up and continued to go forth, and eventually I trotted outside of the woods into a big open space with a huge building in the distance.
"That must be the school! I did it!" I excitedly shouted, a little laugh even coming out in between words. I was on the side of the building, not the front, so I started walking again. Once I saw the name of the place in big letters, I smiled. I actually found it, with the help of a gps of course, but I still found it.
I'm pretty proud of myself.
Now, all we do is wait. I passed the time by counting grass strands, which is odd but it works. Soon, I saw students start to get out of cars and others were already walking. It was undoubtedly scary, and I was starting to get nervous. Everyone's eyes were on me, giving me strange looks, and some whispering to one another. Nonetheless, once the doors opened I still held my head up high with power. I need to show them that even though I'm new, I'm not one to be messed with.
I pulled my schedule out, my dad had picked it up for me when he first came here. I just need to find my classes, and hopefully the rest of my high school life will unfold and blossom into a good one. I decided it was probably best to ask someone though, because it also gives me a chance to make a friend.
I walked through the halls, and kids were all around the lockers so I couldn't even tell which one was mine. I looked around, trying to find a face that didn't look so intimidating, and my eyes landed on a girl about my height with white hair and a really nice sense of style. She was already talking to some other people who I assumed were her friends, they were all laughing.
I took a deep breath, and headed their way.
Well, here goes nothing.
